We look at games where most sixes were scored in a T20I game:

#4 India vs Sri Lanka, 2017 – 31

The Holkar Stadium in Indore is known for its short boundaries and flat track. Batters relish the conditions trusting they can hit through the line. In the second T20I of the 3-match series against Sri Lanka, India lost the toss and was sent into bat. The presence of dew and short boundaries favoured the team batting second.

India had to post a tall score to feel safe. It was the Rohit Sharma show in Indore from that point onwards. Sharma hit the joint-fastest T20I hundred then, scoring 100 off just 35 balls. He finished with 118 off 43 balls scoring 10 sixes and 12 fours. KL Rahul opening the batting alongside Rohit went big too. He hit 89 off 49 balls scoring 5 fours and 8 sixes.

India posted 260-5 in their batting essay scoring 21 sixes! In response, the Lankans did threaten to come close to India’s score. At 145-1 in 13.1 overs, they put up a spirited chase. But Sri Lanka fell well short of the target losing their last 8 wickets for just 27 runs and the last 7 for 17. They scored 10 sixes off their own. The match saw 31 sixes scored in total! It is the fourth-highest tally in a T20I game.

#3 New Zealand vs Australia, 2018 – 32

Eden Park in Auckland is a venue notoriously famous for its short boundaries. In a T20I game in 2018, New Zealand and Australia went bonkers. Martin Guptill and Colin Munro got the Kiwis off to a wonderful start scoring 132 runs in just 10.4 overs. The pair smashed 15 sixes between them. New Zealand notched up a total of 243-6 batting first. Australia came out all guns blazing.

Their openers racked up 121 runs in just 8.3 overs. Glenn Maxwell and Aaron Finch provided the finishing touches as Australia won with 7 balls to spare. Both sides scored a total of 32 sixes and 33 fours in this game.

#2 West Indies vs India, 2016 – 32

It is counted among the finest T20 games ever. West Indies and India threw boundary punches in Lauderhill in 2016 in a T20I. India opting to field invited the carnage. Evin Lewis smashed a 49-ball 100 to set the West Indies up for a huge total. Johnson Charles smashed 79 from just 33 balls to deflate India. The visitors had to chase down a record total of 246.

India lost two quick wickets but Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul’s partnership put India well on course for a win. Sharma made a terrific 28-ball 62 while Rahul brought up a fantastic ton scoring 110 off just 51 balls. India lost out narrowly as they finished just a run short. The game saw 32 sixes and 35 fours being scored.

#1 South Africa vs West Indies, 2023 – 35

It was a muscle fest in Centurion in March 2023 when South Africa went up against the West Indies. In 38.5 overs, both sides scored a total of 517 runs. Put into bat, West Indies lost the wicket of Brandon King early. Kyle Mayers and Johnson Charles then put on a stellar show. The latter in particular was severe on the South African bowlers. He hammered 118 off 46 balls scoring 11 sixes and 10 fours.

The West Indies posted a mammoth total of 258-5. South Africa finished off the chase in just 18.5 overs. Their top three scored at strike rates of 227.27, 242.85, and 400! Quinton De Kock scored a 44-ball 100, Reeza Hendricks smashed 68 off 28 balls and captain Aiden Markram finished off the chase with a 21-ball 38. The game saw a total of 35 sixes being scored and 46 fours hit. It is a record that will take some doing to overpower!
