Michael Holding Appointed MCC Foundation Patron

Michael Holding Has Joined The MCC Foundation As A Patron:

The former West Indies fast bowler and broadcaster, Michael Holding, is a vocal advocate for cricket equality and the greater society.

He and fellow Sky Sports commentator Ebony Rainford-Brent gave powerful accounts of their perceptions of racism at the start of England ‘s international season and after the death of George Floyd in police custody in the USA.

As West Indies, England and Ireland had earlier in the summer, Holding subsequently criticised teams for not continuing to take a knee in support of the Black Lives Matter campaign.

Holding said he was “thrilled” by the chance to join the work of the MCC Foundation to “make cricket a game championing respect and equality for everyone.”

Holding said, “Cricket has the authority to heal broken societies, offer hope in the most desperate of times, and change lives.” “There is a great deal of suffering and prejudice in our country, but the Foundation empowers and encourages young people to create a brighter future through cricket.”

The MCC Foundation, the charitable arm of the Marylebone Cricket Club, runs a range of projects, including supplying government-educated cricketers and mental health workshops with coaching and playing opportunities.

Sarah Fane, director of the MCC Foundation, said: “Over the past year, the public’s consciousness has been occupied by critical discussions about equality and diversity. These have been debated and felt in all aspects of society.”

While cricket is more diverse than ever, we acknowledge that there are disparities that still influence the sport, and we are determined to play our part in changing the landscape to make cricket a representation of our nation’s diversity.

“During the England-West Indies Test, I was profoundly moved by Michael’s dignified and enlightening contribution to the debate on racism, and am proud to have him as our patron.”

The appointment of Holding follows that of Stephen Fry last month, an actor, mental health advocate and cricket enthusiast. As patrons, they are joined by Claire Taylor, Mike Brearley, Mike Atherton and Mike Gatting.
