Post their retirement, we’ve seen Srilanka struggle to find young talents and reliable players. No major ICC tournament has been won by Srilanka post-2014. Mathews and Karunaratne refer Muttiah Muralitharan
Angelo Mathews, Dimuth Karunaratne Term Muttiah Muralitharan As “Unprofessional” For Comments On Contract Dispute
On-field performances are bad but off-field too, moreover, players are facing controversies. The latest controversy is related to the annual contracts of the players who are Angelo Matthews, Muttiah Muralitharan and Dimuth Karunaratne.
In the current series vs India, Srilanka has sidelined Angelo Matthews and Karunaratne. Few players were suspended because of the bio bubble breach in England which includes Kusal Mendis, Niroshan Dickwella, and Danushka Gunathilaka.
Muralitharan’s actions were also described as “unprofessional”
Mathews and Karunaratne refer Muttiah Muralitharan. In an interview, Muralitharan addressed the off-field contract problem, naming Mathews and Karunaratne as the leading factors. In response, the cricketers replied by writing Muralitharan letters. Muralitharan’s actions were also described as “unprofessional” by Matthews and Karunaratne in the letter.
“It is unfair and untrue that you state that the issue in the contracts was purely money,” the letter read. “We feel that you were not properly informed of the correct sequence of events, or was possibly given wrong information. Possibly by parties who wish to create a rift between the players and the administration and create disharmony,” it added.
Srilanka lost the first ODI match vs India where Indian players looked very comfortable with both bat and ball. Prithvi Shaw and Ishan Kishan gave India a quickfire start and later Captain Dhawan easily chased the target to bring the victory for India. The second match will be played tomorrow at the same venue, Colombo.
