In the midst of Bangladesh’s one-off Test against Zimbabwe at the Harare Sports Club, Mohammad Mahmudullah Riyad has declared his retirement from Test cricket. The experience also kept quiet about it on his social media accounts. The BCB president, Nazmul Hasan Papon, was upset by Mahmudullah’s sudden retirement. Hasan was strong in his assessment that the development may have a critical impact on the team during a match. Hasan described Mahmudullah’s choice as “unacceptable” and “emotional.”
“I have not been informed officially but someone called me on the phone and said he doesn’t want to play Tests anymore,” said Hasan.
Such An Announcement Will Have A Negative Impact On The Team: Hasan
“Apparently, he told the dressing room. I think it is highly unusual since the match isn’t even over. I think he did it from emotion. Such an announcement will have a negative impact on the team. It is unacceptable. I have no problem if someone doesn’t want to play, but there is no need to create a mess in the middle of a series,” he stated.
“Four or five days before they left for Zimbabwe, we asked all the players to inform us which formats they want to play. Riyad wrote that he wants to play all three formats. Regarding Tests, he wrote that he wants to play in the format if given the opportunity, which is why we picked him in Tests. I find it astounding that he is talking about retirement,” Hasan added.
After his last appearance against Pakistan in February 2020, Mahmudullah made an incredible return to Test cricket. With his fifth century in the competition, the 35-year-old enjoyed his 50th Test match. In the first innings, the right-hander batted at No- 8 and scored an undefeated 150 runs with 17 fours and a six.
He also contributed to a 191-run ninth-wicket stand with Taskin Ahmed, who scored a crucial 75. Mahmudullah got his Test debut in 2009 and has since been in or out of the team owing to poor performances. However, in the purest format, he just needs 86 runs to achieve the 3000-run milestone.
