Joe Root Enrolls his name for IPL 2023 Mini-Auction

IPL 2023 Auction Player Update

IPL 2023 Mini Auction Player Update: Joe Root wants to explore the T20 Leagues and has zero expectations on salary or any particular club

The mini-auction for the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL), scheduled for December 23 in Kochi, is already planned and being prepared for. It would be a smaller-scale auction this time because the mega-auction took place earlier in the year. The ten franchises had already made decisions about which players they would release and keep.

Despite the fact that this is a mini-auction, the marquee category is seeing some participation from some well-known players. It’s interesting to note that Joe Root, a former English Test captain who has never participated in the competition. He is the most well-known player to enter the 2023 mini-auction. Additionally, he didn’t participate in an England Twenty20 International (T20I) until 2019.

IPL 2023 Mini Auction: Joe Root’s Last Match

He hasn’t played the shortest format because of several international obligations and a five-year stint as England’s Test captain. In a match against Pakistan in May 2019, he last made an appearance, recording a 42-ball 47. Apart from T20 Blast and The Hundred, his only involvement with domestic T20 competitions for the 2018–19 season was with the Sydney Thunder team of the Big Bash League (BBL).

IPL 2023 Auction: Zero Expectations

Root is well aware that he might suffer the same fate and not find a buyer. He does not have any expectations for the salary or a certain team preference. Other than the desire to learn more about the top T20 league in the globe.

IPL 2023 Auction Joe Root’s Comments

Root started off by saying that “I have no thoughts or feelings of retirement or slowing down or playing fewer formats. If anything, I feel a little bit more freedom with my time. I always used to get rested for the T20s and I feel like I got alienated from the format because I had not played enough of it.”

He concluded by saying “You can feel like you are getting left behind a little bit. Now, the next couple of years might be a good time to explore playing a little bit more of that format and see how far I can take that side of my game.”

IPL 2023 Auction: Root’s Prior Experience in IPL

Root did not sell during the 2018 IPL auction and has never played in the Indian Premier League ever again. Moreover, in the last two T20 World Cups, England’s selection committee did not include him in the team (2021 and 2022).

Root was frequently benched for the bilateral T20I series because of the additional duty of managing the Test team. Having released himself from that responsibility in April of this year. He is now looking to learn more about the shortest format and is also looking forward to the 50-over World Cup the following year.
