India’s bowlers, driven by Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah, put up an uninterrupted 89-run ninth-wicket partnership, allowing captain Virat Kohli to declare at 298, giving England a chase of 272 in 60 overs. Both England opening were bowled for a duck by the visitors’ bowlers, Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah.
This was always going to be a difficult assignment after that, and after England captain Joe Root left, the damage had been done for the home team. A few remarks were passed among India and England players throughout the play.
It will take a very good England team to come back from here: Vaughan
Certain England players, including Mark Wood, Jos Buttler, and James Anderson, were spotted contributing to the duo mostly during the ninth-wicket partnership among Bumrah and Shami. England, according to Vaughan, has electrified India.
“England have prodded them. They have fired them up. It will take a very good England team to come back from here – and I don’t think they will. It’s going to be a long three Test matches from here,” Vaughan told BBC.
Jasprit and Shami were outstanding: Virat Kohli
On day 4, Bumrah began bowling short-pitched deliveries against Anderson, which irritated the experienced seamer. When Bumrah went in to bat on day 5, England gave him another load, and Kohli believes that pushed them to go for the hunt.
“The way we played in the second innings after being put under pressure – Jasprit and Shami were outstanding. We had the belief we can get them out in 60 overs. A bit of tension on the field really motivated us to finish the game,” Kohli said after India’s 151-run win.
