Annual player salaries hit the roof with the advent of the IPL. The first-ever auction saw interesting trends emerge with few teams banking on star power while others exercised restraint. #10 Gujarat Titans – INR 174.3 crores

Their big-ticket signings all came in the players’ draft when they picked both Hardik Pandya and Rashid Khan for INR 15 crores each. GT in the two years so far has been a side who have chosen balance over star power. They have so far spent a total of INR 174.3 crores in these two years.

#9 Lucknow Super Giants – INR 179.8 crores

RR bought Chris Morris for INR 16.25 crores in 2021 making him the costliest ever auction signing then. They made the most noise in the first season signing a brigade of superstars. SRH since then has been a relatively low-key side. Harry Brook signed for INR 13 crores in 2023 was their most expensive auction signing ever. They have spent INR 735.4 crores on player salaries so far.

#6 Chennai Super Kings – INR 854.1 crores

They are the most popular side in the league’s history. The Chennai Super Kings made the most expensive signing ever in the first auction when they bought MS Dhoni for INR 6 crores. CSK has spent INR 854.1 crores so far on player salaries.

#5 Punjab Kings – INR 860.9 crores

#2 Mumbai Indians – INR 978.3 crores

They were the most expensive team in the IPL when the tournament started. Mumbai Indians have been one of the highest payers when it comes to player salaries. They have spent INR 978.3 crores so far on player salaries.

#1 Royal Challengers Bangalore – INR 1003.7 crores

They are the only team who have crossed the INR 1,000 (1003.7) crores mark on player salaries so far. RCB’s most high-profile player continues to remain Virat Kohli who is their highest-paid player even now.
