IPL 2022 is set to feature 10 teams. Two new teams have been added to the league. IPL 2022 will hence feature a player’s draft and a mega auction. It is through the player draft wherein two new teams will get to pick 3 players each from the non-retained list. They can pick two Indian and 1 overseas player each. The rest of the players’ bunch will head into the auction, lets see Players Who Deserved Better Deals in IPL-2022.
IPL retentions:
The 8 original IPL teams had the option of retaining up to 4 players. They could retain a maximum of 3 Indian players and 2 overseas players. But can’t exceed the 4 player retention rule.
Salary Slab:
As per the IPL governing council’s rule, the first retained player had to be paid INR 16 crores. The next 3 in line would be paid INR 12 crores, INR 8 crores, and 6 crores respectively. Teams had the option to play around with the monetisation part of the contract. Few teams used this to their benefit thereby saving money for the franchise. This resulted in few quality players receiving less than memorable deals.
We look at 3 Players Who Deserved Better Deals in IPL-2022:
#3 Anrich Nortje
Anrich Nortje has set the IPL on fire. He has easily been the most fearsome pacer in the last couple of seasons. Nortje’s rise has been sensational. He has easily overshadowed his much-decorated fellow countryman, Kagiso Rabada.
His pace and relentless accuracy has unsettled the best of batsmen. He is not just disciplined but is economical too. Nortje is equally dangerous both upfront and at the death. If released, Nortje would have been super popular in the auctions. Hence Delhi’s retention contract of INR 6.5 crores for him seems a steal.
#2 Sunil Narine
Sunil Narine is only one among the 3 players to have won the MVP award twice. He singlehandedly won them the campaign in 2012. Narine has easily been KKR’s biggest X-factor. He reinvented himself as a power hitter too.
Narine has remained central to KKR’s plans. He and Andre Russell were the two overseas retentions for KKR. But KKR surprised everyone when they handed Narine a contract worth INR 6 crores. If that’s not a steal, we don’t know what is!
#1 Prithvi Shaw
When it comes to retentions this season, Delhi played their cards brilliantly. They not only handed their talisman, Rishabh Pant, the costliest contract but also managed to retain all their utility players. Prithvi Shaw’s signing is one such.
DC rightfully retained Shaw who has been their enforcer since 2018. He would have gone for a huge sum in the auctions considering his potential but DC managed to hold him. They retained Shaw for just INR 7.5 crores. Thereby signing two-star players for a much lesser price than they would have eventually got in the auctions.
