IPL 2023: Biggest Salary Drops

Biggest Salary Drops in IPL 2023: There was one section of players who received a big windfall in the IPL 2023 mini auctions. The trio of all-rounders pocketed INR 52.50 crores among themselves. A total of 167 crores was spent in the auctions. 31% of the amount spent was splurged on the top three allrounders.

On the other side, there were a few cricketers who suffered a pay dip. They got selected eventually but their stocks alarmingly decreased as compared to their previous IPL pay cheque.

We look at a few such Biggest Salary Drops in IPL 2023

#7 Kane Williamson – 85.71%

His is the most prominent name on the list. Kane Williamson was one of the highest-paid players who was retained ahead of the mega auction. SRH paid Williamson INR 14 crores in 2022. But a disappointing season resulted in Hyderabad releasing him ahead of the mini-auction in 2023.

SRH’s loss proved to be Gujarat Titans’ gain as they picked him at his base price of INR 2 crores. Williamson’s salary though took a hit of 85.71% this season as compared to the last one.

#6 Murugan Ashwin – 87.50%

He is someone who always prefers remaining under the radar. Murugan Ashwin played for Mumbai Indians in the last season. Despite showing promise he couldn’t really translate into match-winning performances. Just when it seemed he will find no takers, the Rajasthan Royals purchased him for his base price of INR 20 lacs. It meant his salary dipped to 87.50% as the last pay cheque he drew was INR 1.6 crores in 2021.

#5 Amit Mishra – 87.50%

He is one of the most underrated IPL bowlers. Amit Mishra continues to stay relevant despite age clearly not being on his side. The wrist-spinner will ply his trade for Lucknow Super Giants this season. He was brought at his base price of INR 50 lacs. It was an 87.50% drop from his previous salary of INR 4 crores that he earned while playing for Delhi Capitals in 2021.

#4 Jhye Richardson – 89.29%

The Australian speedster was purchased for INR 14 crores in the IPL 2021 auctions. Jhye Richardson though couldn’t really bring his A-game to the league. He wasn’t part of IPL 2022. He had kept a base price of INR 1.5 crores in the IPL 2023 mini-auction. Mumbai Indians wasted no time to get him onboard. They bought him for INR 1.5 crores itself. His pay scale hence took a hit of 89.29%.

#3 Odean Smith – 91.67%

It was known in cricketing circles that it was the recency factor that helped Odean Smith fetch a lucrative deal in the IPL 2022 mega auction. The Punjab Kings had brought Smith for a massive INR 6 crores last season. He had a mixed IPL that led the side to release him ahead of the auctions.

The Gujarat Titans though were keen on acquiring Odean Smith. They were surprised to buy him at his base price of INR 50 lacs. His pay scale took a dip of 91.67%.

#2 Kyle Jamieson – 93.33%

He was the second most expensive player in the auction in IPL 2021. The Royal Challengers Bangalore had splurged INR 15 crores on Kyle Jamieson. He didn’t exactly set the stage on fire that season while he skipped the next one.

There was not a lot of buzz around Jamieson this time around. It is to CSK’s credit that they bought the allrounder despite him not featuring in any active T20 cricket. Jamieson was picked for his base price of INR 1 crore. His pay scale took a hit of 93.33%.

#1 Romario Shepherd – 93.55%

Sunrisers Hyderabad purchased Romario Shepherd for INR 7.75 crores in the mega auctions of IPL 2022. Shepherd didn’t have the best of IPLs last season. SRH released him ahead of the mini auctions. The Lucknow Super Giants though found merit in the Caribbean all-rounder. They bought him at his base price of INR 75 lacs this time around. His salary took a 93.55% hit in this auction.
