IPL 2020 Tournament Likely To Be Cancelled

After the Prime of India Narendra Modi declared complete nation lockdown for 3 weeks, there has been talks whirling round the cricketing fraternity of cancelling the 13th edition of Indian Premier League (IPL) tournament for the year 2020.

There has been a constant pressure from Central government on Board Cricket Control of India (BCCI), for the cancellation of tournament from the beginning. Post the lockdown orders were issued starting the 24th March midnight, the intensity of pressure has increased even more. However, there has been no official statement made by the authorities of the BCCI. In a recent media briefing Sourav Ganguly, BCCI Chief said, “We still stand with what we had decided earlier. Right now the tournament of IPL 2020 remains suspended till 15th April. Whether it would be cancelled or postponed we are yet to decide on it.”

Earlier the 13th edition of IPL 2020 was scheduled to start from 29th of March. However in the wake of the spread of Coronavirus infection, due to mass gathering at the stadium, the tournament was suspended till 15th April by the BCCI authorities.

Nes Wadia Calls To Display Larger Responsibility:

In the meantime, King’s 11 Punjab owner Nes Wadia said, “It is better that the BCCI authorities, suspend the tournament for the time being. Being the organizers of the game. It is important that we conduct the game or any event with a larger role and responsibility. By May if the situation is brought under control, the authorities can think of new dates for the game.”

BCCI Apprehensive About IPL 2020 Tournament:

Senior officials from the BCCI said that after the lockdown period of 21 days is over, it would be next to impossible to conduct the tournament. As after the lockdown period is over, there would be restrictions imposed after 14th April. Under these circumstances, it would better that the tournament is cancelled altogether.
