India’s highest totals in ODI World Cup: The Indian team is one of the few to constantly post scores over 320-330 in the ODI format. India in fact had most of its tall scores in the World Cup before the introduction of two new ball rules. Their batting has always been their strength, especially during the 2003 and 2011 World Cups. Indian batters have topped the run-charts in the 1996, 2003, and 2019 editions. Sachin Tendulkar was the second-highest run-getter in the 2011 edition. This dominance reflects in the huge totals that India posted in the World Cups.

We look at 5 of India’s highest totals in the ODI World Cup:
#5 338-10 vs England, 2011
India won the toss and had no hesitation in batting first. It was India’s first home match in the 2011 World Cup. The track appeared a batting beauty and India’s top order made full use of it. India got off to a rollicking start as the pair of Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar dealt in boundaries. Tendulkar scored his century number 98 in this game. He scored 120 off 115 balls. India at one stage looked good to reach a score of 355-360 but was bowled out for 338.
Andrew Strauss led England gave a spirited reply stunning the home crowd. At one stage they appeared favourites to win this game. It was down to the brilliance of Zaheer Khan that India managed to tie the game. A result that nobody expected after India put on such a total!
#4 352-5 vs Australia, 2019
India had lost to Australia in the semifinal of the 2015 ODI World Cup. It proved to be sweet revenge in the end as India coasted to win in this league match in 2019. Batting first, all of India’s batters made useful contributions. Shikhar Dhawan smashed a top-class century to lay the foundation.
India’s top-6 barring Rohit Sharma scored at more than run-a-ball. Kohli and Sharma played alongside Dhawan while Hardik Pandya, MS Dhoni, and KL Rahul provided the finishing touches. India finished with a mammoth 352-5. It is the highest total posted in a World Cup against Australia!
#3 370-4 vs Bangladesh, 2011
It was the opening game of the 2011 World Cup. Bangladesh shocked India in the previous edition of the World Cup in 2007. They ousted India in the league stage creating a huge uproar. India was determined to right the wrongs this time around. Virender Sehwag’s masterful 175 powered India to a mammoth total of 370-4. Virat Kohli became the first Indian to score a ton on his World Cup debut. The score proved to be too much for Bangladesh and India started the World Cup campaign with a win!
#2 373-6 vs Sri Lanka, 1999
It was a must-win game for the Indian team. Sri Lanka won the toss and put India into bat under overcast conditions in Taunton. India had lost both their World Cup games against Sri Lanka in the 1996 World Cup. They couldn’t afford a misstep. India lost their first wicket early.
Rahul Dravid and Sourav Ganguly then stitched a world-record partnership of 318 runs to hammer Sri Lanka. India amassed 373-6 thanks to Ganguly’s 183 and Dravid’s 145. They bowled Sri Lanka out for just 216 and boasted of the highest Net Run Rate in the competition.
#1 413-5 vs Bermuda, 2007
India had a horror 2007 ODI World Cup. They suffered two defeats one against Bangladesh in their opening game and another against Sri Lanka in a do-or-die match. Sandwiched between these two heartbreaking defeats was one record-breaking win over minnows, Bermuda. Bermuda surprisingly elected to field first and Indian batters made merry. Virender Sehwag hit a fine 114 off 87 balls scoring 17 fours and 3 sixes.
But it was the fifth-wicket partnership between Yuvraj Singh and Sachin Tendulkar that helped India register the highest World Cup score (413-5) of that time. The duo put on a stand of 122 in just 62 balls. Yuvraj pummelled 83 off 46 balls while Tendulkar batting at number 6 scored 57 off just 29 balls.
