The increase of young people is one of the major factors for India’s recent success. Rishabh Pant, Mohammed Siraj, Washington Sundar, and Shubman Gill have all put up strong performances, which have helped India win in Australia and at home against England.
As a result, the inclusion of these youngsters in the team for India’s tour to England came as no surprise. There are so many young players available that India has put together a young team that will tour Sri Lanka in July for a limited-overs match.
“Don’t judge Gill’s potential by his IPL performance. He has got a good strike rate in Test cricket”- Ramiz Raja About Gill
While all of these youngsters have done well, former Pakistan cricketer Ramiz Raja is particularly impressed with one of them, Shubman Gill. Raja believes that India opener Gill should not be evaluated just on his performance in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and that he should be supported by everyone.
Gill had a fantastic Test debut, making a fairytale debut at the Melbourne Cricket Ground and then helping India win a historic Test series in Australia. However, he was unable to replicate his home performance against India and failed to score in the IPL 2021 before the competition was suspended. Shubman made 132 runs in seven games as an opener for the Kolkata Knight Riders.
The Punjabi youngster is presently in England, preparing up for the final World Test Championship against New Zealand, which begins on 18 June. Raja said that Gill had great potential and the 21-year-old batsman. reminded him of a young Rohit Sharma.
“Don’t judge Gill’s potential by his IPL performance. He has got a good strike rate in Test cricket and has shots all around the wicket. He needs to be backed by everyone because I suspect in a country like India where you have a lot of resources, some youngster may not get as many opportunities,” Raja said.
“He has got great potential. Gill reminds me a lot of Rohit Sharma in his early days. I remember watching Rohit in Pakistan even before he made his international debut. Sometimes, only a few balls can give you the idea of future greatness. Make no mistake; Gill can be in the league of Sharma.”
