India Can Rule Women’s Cricket too: WV Raman

WV Raman’s Belief:

The chief coach of the India women’s national cricket team, Woorkeri Venkat Raman believes that the women’s cricket team is headed towards only in one direction- up. He is the one who took the Women’s Cricket team to the maiden final of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup.

The 54 years old, WV Raman is very quite & truthful with his opinion and evaluation of the team. In an interview, he opened up on many topics.

Excerpts:

What were the gains of the team from the tri-series, followed by the ICC T20 World Cup?

It was a difficult tour. People are very anxious to see how the girls of the team would rise to the situation. They came out along with flying colours since they did not get impressed by a stronger opponent. Also, the girls have to settle frequently and transform certain things to win on those tracks, which are totally different from what we get here in India. They perform well on both counts.

How do you explain their performance in the matches?

Their performance has provided a lot of self-confidence and proved that Indian Women’s Cricket can be a strong force as well.  They are a young team and their outstanding performance was very much important to encourage girls, especially those girls who are hesitating to accept women’s cricket as a profession.

Was the team over-dependent on the spin in hindsight?

It is not like that we were dependent on the spin. We need to understand the situation and field our best combination. Of course spin was our strength. Now, we can say this could have occurred or that would have done in a better way, but according to me the dependence on spinners was not a disaster.  In case you are weak in the first 30-45 minutes in a T20 match, then it is very tough to come back.
