ICC Should Make A Decision To Determine WTC Winners – If The Match Ends In A Draw: Sunil Gavaskar

The ICC World Test Championship (WTC) Final between India and New Zealand in Southampton has so far been dominated by rain. Due to the continuous rain, two whole days – Day 1 and Day 4 were wiped out. Rain, as expected, is causing worry among fans and analysts. However, there are still two days left in the headline clash, with the sixth day (June 23) serving as a reserve day. If the game is a tie, the trophy will be shared by both teams. Gavaskar says about ICC winner.

ICC should come up with formula to find winner in case of drawn WTC final: Sunil Gavaskar

Former cricketer who turned as a commentator, Sunil Gavaskar has an interesting view on the situation and has recommended that the ICC develop a method to determine the winner if the match finishes in a tie. After being called to bat, India scored 217 runs, while New Zealand responded with 101 runs with only two wickets lost.

‘ICC’s cricket committee should think and then make a decision’- Sunil Gavaskar

However, renowned commentator Harsha Bhogle and former New Zealand bowler Simon Doull believe that all three outcomes are still possible. However, a draw appears to be extremely likely, and Gavaskar believes the ICC should look at the problem for future matches.

“There must be a formula to pick a winner in case of a drawn World Test Championship final. ICC’s cricket committee should think and then make a decision,” Gavaskar told in an interview.

The Ageas Bowl conditions were perfect for quick bowling, which the Kiwi pacers took advantage of, with Kyle Jamieson leading the way with five wickets. The same was anticipated of their opponents, but Indian bowlers failed on Day 3. With Day 4 behind us, the prospect of receiving the results in the next two days seems to be a little poor. Gavaskar predicts India and New Zealand will split the trophy from the first-ever WTC final.

If this occurs, it will be the second time the trophy has been shared in the ICC finals. The first such event occurred in 2002, during the ICC Champions Trophy finals, when the match between India and Sri Lanka was called off due to heavy rain at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on September 29th. The trophy was split between the two teams.
