Former West Indies skipper Shivnarine Chanderpaul (Happy Birthday Shivnarine Chanderpaul) is celebrating his 48th birthday today.

Chanderpaul was born on August 16, 1974 in Unity, Guyana, and is known for his reliable batting and brilliant game knowledge.

During his international career, he has scored 20,988 runs (test+ODI+T20 combined), including 41 centuries and 125 half-centuries, and has played a crucial role in guiding West Indies to many important matches.

Chanderpaul represented West Indies in all formats of the game and is a key player of his side as he reliable middle order batter and soaked the pressure very well if the openers failed to give good starts.

How he started in International cricket?

Making his international debut against England in 1994. Chanderpaul didn’t take long in cementing his place in the star-studded West Indies side. He instantly became everyone’s favourite due to his impressive technique and defending approach.

Talking about one of his fine innings, when West Indies recorded a win against a strong Indian side. In the 3rd test between West Indies and India in Barbados in 1997. West Indies lost their two wickets early, and the other batters also failed to stay on crease, it was Shivnarine Chanderpaul with his unusual stance stood tall and scored a brilliant century and remained unbeaten till the end to help his side post 298 on board in first innings.

In reply, India scored 319 runs, courtesy of Captain Sachin Tendulkar’s excellent 92.

West Indies started their second innings with 21 runs trail and they bowled out for just 140 and asked India to score 120 to win the game, which they failed to make and bundled out for 81 and lost the game by 38 runs.

Chanderpaul, who scored a brilliant century in the first innings later won the man of the match award for his heroic knock that rescued the struggling West Indies innings and helped the side to put up a respected total.

The dependable batter also handled the responsibility of West Indies captaincy in 14 tests and 16 one-day games.

Chanderpaul’s Records and Achievements

The veteran southpaw represented West Indies in 164 Tests, 268 ODIs and 22 T20Is. He smashed a whopping 11,867 runs in test cricket, 8778 runs in one-day internationals and 343 in the T20Is before announcing his retirement in 2016. While he picked 23 wickets in Tests and ODIs.

Chanderpaul holds several records in the longest format of the game and in the limited-over cricket as well.

He holds the record of scoring most runs in test cricket while batting on No.5 position (6883). He also holds the record for registering the highest opening partnership for West Indies alongside Stuart Williams (200*).
