Gujarat Titans Captain in IPL 2024
Shubman Gill has been named captain of the Gujarat Titans, following the franchise’s confirmation of Hardik Pandya’s return to the Mumbai Indians through trade. Gill, who earned the Orange Cap earlier this year, will succeed Hardik, who guided GT for two seasons, winning the IPL title in 2022 and finishing second in 2023.
“Shubman Gill has shown growth in stature and standing over the last two years at the highest level of the game. We’ve seen him mature not only as a batter but also as a leader in cricket. His contribution on the field has helped Gujarat Titans emerge as a formidable force, guiding the team through a successful campaign in 2022 and a strong run in 2023. His maturity and skill is evident in his on-field performance and we are extremely excited to embark on a new journey with a young leader like Shubman at the helm,” Vikram Solanki, Director of Cricket, Gujarat Titans, said.
“As the first captain of Gujarat Titans, Hardik Pandya has helped the franchise deliver two fantastic seasons that resulted in winning one IPL championship and one appearance in the final. He has now expressed a desire to return to his original team Mumbai Indians. We respect his decision and wish him all the very best in his future endeavours.”
Gill played in 17 games for Gujarat Titans in the 2023 season, scoring 890 runs, his highest effort coming in at 129. He had a strike rate of 157.80 and an average of 59.33. He also took home the Orange Cap in 2023 edition.
Gill began his IPL career in 2018 with the Kolkata Knight Riders. He was signed by the Titans for INR 7 crore in advance of the 2022 auction. He amassed 483 runs in the 2022 edition and played an unbeaten knock of 45 in the final game against the Rajasthan Royals, which saw Titans win their first-ever title.
