For 28 ICC events 93 Offers, BCCI Non-Committal

ICC Efforts To Find Bidders To Host ICC Events:

Even as the ICC (International Cricket Council) takes some time to see if the T20 World Cup can be organized as per the schedule, there has been some kind of progress in efforts to get bidders to host the events of ICC for the anticipated 2023-31 rights cycle.

In the reply to the ‘expression of interest’ announcement sent to all the 15 board members including the related countries, the ICC has got 93 offers for staging 28 events in eight years.

The source confirmed that England, India and Australia have acknowledged as well. According to the source, three board members didn’t get into specifics of any ICC event.

Since the ICC plans to organize one world event each year from 2023 to 2031, the projected rights are controversial. The main reason for the argument is the introduction of two extra world events; those are a T20 Champions Cup, going to be held in between10 nations in 2024 and 2028.

This scheduling of games would get into any bilateral cricket event that bigger boards like BCCI may want to schedule, for which now it holds media rights near about Rs. 60 crore per game.

Neither the ICC nor the BCCI wants to discuss this thing. From the behaviour, it is understood that the response of BCCI is only to stay in disagreement when the analysis on the rights arise in future meetings.

When the ‘expression of interest’ was required first by the ICC in last year, the BCCI was retained in its response. BCCI responded, “Escalating ICC events will have great consequences on bilateral cricket and that’s why all plans have to be analysed and discussed in detail.”

Including the eight men’s events, ICC is also looking for bidders for the women’s events, the U-19 World Cups to be organized in every two years and the World Test Championship finals in each alternate year.

By considering the present disagreement between the ICC and the leading boards over the profit-sharing, FTP (Future Tours Programme) as well as losses because of the coronavirus those are yet to be determined, the ICC elections this July is very much crucial.
