Flashback-2004 Champions Trophy Had A Surprise Winner, West Indies

The 2004 ICC Champions trophy was the fourth edition of the tournament. It was held in England between 10th September and 25th September. West Indies won the tournament where England was the runner-up.

12 teams played in the tournament which included the 10 Test-playing nations along with Kenya and USA, which made its international debut in cricket with this tournament.

The tournament was played in a round-robin format in group stages and after that, it entered the knockout stage.

The 12 teams were divided into 4 groups which consisted of 3 teams each. Teams in each group played one match against each other and the top team from each group qualified for the semi-finals.

Group A- Australia, New Zealand, and the United States.

Group B- West Indies, Bangladesh, and South Africa.

Group C- Pakistan, India, and Kenya

Group D- England, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe

On 10th September in the first match of the tournament, New Zealand beat the USA by 210 runs. New Zealand batsman Nathan Astle made 145 runs not out, the highest individual score in Champions Trophy history then. Final scores NZ- 347/4 USA-137/10 in 42.4 overs. Jacob Oram of New Zealand took 5 wickets.

In another match that started on 10th and ended on 11th England defeated Zimbabwe by 152 runs.  England was invited to bat by Zimbabwe after winning the toss. 38 overs into England’s innings rain halted the play and the remaining match was played the next day.

Final scores England-299/7 (50 overs) Zimbabwe 147 all out in 39 overs.

On the 11th September match, India beat Kenya by 98 runs. India Captain Ganguly made 90 runs.

Final scores India- 290/4 Kenya-192/7 (50 overs).

On 12th September South Africa defeated Bangladesh by 9 wickets. Bangladesh was bowled for a low score of 93 runs in 31.3 overs and South Africa chased the score in 17.5 overs. SA bowler Langeveldt claimed 3 wickets.

On 13th September Australia beat the USA by 9 wickets. Scores: USA-65 all out in 24 overs. Australia – 66/1 in 7.5 overs. Aussie bowler Kasprowicz took 4 wickets for 14 runs.

On 15th Pakistan beat Kenya by 7 wickets. The match which was scheduled for 14th was postponed to 15th which was a reserve day due to rain.

Scores Kenya-94/10 (32 overs) Pakistan -95/3 (18.4 overs)

On 15th in another match, West Indies beat Bangladesh by 138 runs. West Indian Chris Gayle hit 99 runs.

Scores WI-269/3 Bangladesh-131 (39.3 overs)

On 16th Australia defeated New Zealand by 7 wickets. Australian Andrew Symonds hit 71 runs not out

Scores NZ-198/8 Australia-199/3 (37.2 overs)

Australia entered semis with this win as it won both its matches.

England beat Sri Lanka by 49 runs on September 18th as the match which was supposed to be held on 17th but postponed due to rain. Andrew Flintoff scored a century (104) and took 2 wickets.

Scores England 251/7 (50 overs) Sri Lanka-95/5 (24 overs)

Sri Lanka’s target was reduced to 145 runs in 24 overs.

England entered semi-finals after winning both its matches.

The original September 18th match took place between South Africa and West Indies. The match ended on the 19th due to disruption from rain.

Scores South Africa-246/6 (50 overs) West Indies-249/5 (48.2 overs). South Africa’s Gibbs made century(101). West Indies Ramnaresh Sarwan made 75 runs who was declared Player of the Match.

West Indies entered semis with this win.

The next match took place between arch-rivals between India and Pakistan. Pakistan won the match in a tight contest by 3 wickets. Rahul Dravid scored 67 and Pakistan’s Mohammad Yousuf scored 81 not out. Pakistan’s Naved-ul-Hasan took 4 wickets.

Scores India-200 (49.5 overs) Pakistan 201/7 (49.2 overs)

India got eliminated from the tournament with this defeat and Pakistan entered the next stage.

Semi-finals

In the first semi-final on September 21st England upset 2003 world cup champion Australia. Australia which batted first scored 259 runs for the loss of 9 wickets. In reply, England achieved the target in 46.3 overs.

England captain Michael Vaughan scored 86 runs and Marcus Trescothick who made 81 led their team to victory.

The second semi-final match was between Pakistan and West Indies on September 22nd. The match was a low-score match. Pakistan which batted first put up a score of 131 runs all out in 38.2 overs. West Indies which batted second chased the score in 28.1 overs.

Ramnaresh Sarwan who had a brilliant run in the tournament made 56 runs and led his team reach finals.

England and West Indies reached finals.

Finals

The match was played at The Oval London. England batted first after West Indies chose fielding after winning the toss.

England made 217 runs in 49.4 overs. Marcus Trescothick who was having a great time in this tournament made a century (104).

West Indies who came to bat in the second innings reached the target in 48.5 overs. They scored 218 for the loss of 8 wickets.

Shivnarine Chanderpaul made 47 runs, the highest score in West Indies side. However, West Indies player Ian Bradshaw who made 34 runs and took 2 wickets received Player of the Match.

West Indies thus won the Champions Trophy in 2004.  West Indies batsman Ramnaresh Sarwan was declared Player of the Tournament.
