Cricketers nowadays are equipped with modern protective gear when they take the field. The protective gear shields the batsmen from getting affected once the ball hits the batsmen’s helmet or grill. But cricket has unfortunately seen a few cases where players who have suffered on-field injuries have succumbed to them.
StumpsandBails brings to you a list of 5 cricketers who sadly lost their lives owing to an injury suffered on the field.
#1 Phillip Hughes
Phillip Hughes was set to become the next big batting star of Australian cricket. He had the technique, he had the grit and the composure to succeed at the highest level. But his career was unfortunately cut short by a bouncer. This freak accident happened during a Sheffield Shield match between New South Wales and South Australia. While facing up to Sean Abbott’s bouncer, Hughes took his eyes off the ball and the ball went to hit him on the backside of his side. Hughes fractured his skull and suffered massive bleeding in his brain. He immediately collapsed on the field post the delivery. The accident happened on 25th November 2014 and Hughes sadly passed away on 27th November 2014. Cricket has never been the same again.
#2 Raman Lamba
Raman Lamba’s episode sent shock waves across the cricketing world. Lamba was a former India international, who was hit on the head while fielding at the dangerous forward short leg position while playing a club match in Dhaka. He slipped into a coma 3 days later, before being declared dead. Raman Lamba was just 38 at the time of his death. He was a prolific player for Delhi having scored over 8000 runs in first-class cricket at an average of 53.84. Lamba represented India in 4 Tests and 32 ODI’s.

#3 Darryn Randall
Darryn Randall suffered an injury while attempting a pull shot in a South African domestic match. The wicket-keeper batsman immediately collapsed on the field, and although he was rushed to a nearby hospital. But sadly Randall couldn’t recover sufficiently from the blow and ended up losing his life.
#4 Zulfiqar Bhatti
Zulfiqar Bhatti, an upcoming Pakistani domestic cricketer suffered the wrath of fate when he succumbed to an on-field injury. Bhatti was just 22 years old when he copped a blow on his chest while batting in a T20 tournament in Sukkur, Sindh, Pakistan. Even though he was immediately taken to the hospital, Bhatti was announced dead on arrival.

#5 Richard Beaumont
Richard Beaumont was all of 33 years when he suffered a suspected heart attack right after capturing a 5-wicket haul in the game. He had decimated the opposition with his fast bowling before suffering a heart arrest on the pitch at Pedmore Cricket Club, Stourbridge. The game was abandoned and Beaumont was airlifted to Birmingham’s Queen Elizabeth hospital. But sadly he was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival.
