Dinesh Chandimal Biography: Lokuge Dinesh Chandimal, popularly known as Dinesh Chandimal is a Sri Lankan cricketer who was born in Balapitiya, Sri Lanka on 18 November 1989. Dinesh Chandimal is a right-hand wicket-keeper batter who had been a part of Sri Lankan cricket from over a decade now. Dinesh Chandimal was the first Sri Lankan captain who led his team in the first-ever day-night test for Sri Lanka. Dinesh Chandimal also went with a bad phase when he was dropped from the team for a long time but since his comeback, Chandimal has been a backbone of Sri Lankan middle order. Dinesh Chandimal has also been a commissioned officer in Sri Lankan army and has also played for the Sri Lanka Army Sports Club many times in his career.

Dinesh Chandimal started off playing cricket at the early age of 7 years. However, at the age of 14 years, he lost his home and went through a bad phase. He later moved to Colombo and attended Ananda College. Dinesh Chandimal captained the Under-17 team at the college and gave magnificent performances. He led his team to 13 unbeaten wins that is still a record. In year 2009, Dinesh Chandimal won Schoolboy Cricketer of the year award for his performances as he smashed 1580 runs in the season.

Dinesh Chandimal started off his domestic career when he was picked in the Sri Lankan youth team. Dinesh Chandimal made his first-class debut in 2010 and smashed half century in the first innings.

Dinesh Chandimal has played 132 first-class matches in his career and scored 9465 runs including 26 centuries and 44 half centuries with the highest score of 354 runs in an innings. Dinesh Chandimal is also involved in 172 catches and done 24 stumpings in his first-class career. Dinesh Chandimal is one of the most successful wicketkeepers in the history of Sri Lanka first-class cricket.

Dinesh Chandimal was roped in by Rajasthan Royals for IPL 2012. In the same year, he signed a contract with Chittagong Vikings for the Bangladesh Premier League.

Dinesh Chandimal was appointed as the captain of Colombo team in the Super 4 Provincial Tournament back in 2018 and then in the SCL T20 League,

Dinesh Chandimal also registered Sri Lanka’s highest first-class individual score in an innings of 354 runs in an innings.

In the inaugural edition of Lanka Premier League in 2020, Dinesh Chandimal was appointed as the captain of the Colombo squad and was retained by Colombo Stars in July 2022.

Dinesh Chandimal made his International debut back in 2010 when he was picked up in the Sri Lankan squad for T20 World Cup. He made his debut in the league match against New Zealand.

After the World Cup, Dinesh Chandimal was picked up in the Sri Lanka squad for the ODI series against Zimbabwe and India. In the 2nd match of his career, Dinesh Chandimal smashed his maiden ODI century. Dinesh Chandimal also became youngest Sri Lankan player to smash a century in ODIs.

Dinesh Chandimal made his Test debut back in 2011 and smashed centuries in both innings in the second test of his career and became first Sri Lankan batter to do so.

Dinesh Chandimal was picked up in the squad for the ICC Cricket World Cup back in 2015 and smashed fastest half century in a World Cup match. In 2016, Dinesh Chandimal smashed 6 consecutive half centuries. Out of which, he smashed 4 against England and 2 against Australia.

In July 2017, Dinesh Chandimal was appointed as the captain of Sri Lanka test squad and led his team through a difficult phase. In October, Dinesh Chandimal also led Sri Lanka in first ever day-night test for them.

In 2018, Dinesh Chandimal was also banned for 2 tests and 4 ODIs due to a breach in ICC Code of Conduct.

In July 2022, Dinesh Chandimal became first Sri Lankan batter to smash a double century against Australia in the Tests and helped his team in winning the test and helped in drawing the test series.
