Fitness Of Players To Be Monitored:
Like the Yo-Yo test, introduced in 2017 by Shankar Basu, the strength and conditioning coach for the Indian cricket team, Cricket South Africa (CSA) will mandate a fitness test clause in the players’ contract, which will set a minimum selection standard.
Similar to the Yo-Yo Test, where each national player must reach a certain level in the test before they can be selected, and also for many players in the IPL, the CSA clause will examine their national players’ fitness closely.
According to a report in Reuters, the initiative to enforce the clause was taken after a special fitness camp for four players held in January that put their international futures in question as well as concerns that a strict 21-day lockdown in South Africa could leave a number of other players below the required level.
South Africa’s head coach Mark Boucher stated that when the new clause is added, each player would have to maintain fitness standards. He also said in the past, there have been instances where the standard of fitness is below-par.
“Guys need to stay fit because we’re going to incorporate new fitness clauses into contracts,” Boucher clarified in an audio statement released by CSA.
“We have noticed in the recent past that players who aren’t good enough aren’t picked. We are experts and will do what they need to do, “he said.
Due to the severe novel coronavirus pandemic, South Africa’s tour to India had been called off. Since the first match in Dharmashala was washed out the boards took the decision to call off the run. However, the CSA and BCCI have said in the agreement that after season resumes they will re-schedule the series.
In addition to spending time with their families, Boucher suggests the break would act as a perfect way for players to conquer their niggle.
“The plan was also to get some time off for the guys to spend with the family. This also offers them the ability to overcome any niggles.
“The first two or three weeks are often necessary, for physical and mental refreshment. We’ve put the guys around the house in some programs to keep them fit and healthy.
“They must stick to their discipline. After the lockdown time, tests will take place. “
Due to the pandemic, South Africa’s next assignment against Sri Lanka in June has come under the cloud. It is most likely to be canceled.
