Cricket Australia Goes On Furlough:
Cricket Australia (CA) said on Thursday it intended to furlough most of its employees on reduced pay until the end of the financial year to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic challenges.
The global health crisis has disrupted professional cricket worldwide, leaving most boards bracing for major declines in revenues.
“During this phase of isolation, where work has obviously been limited, we made the decision to hold our people down on reduced pay (with the exception of a skeleton staff) effective April 27 …” CA said in a statement.
“We will continue to seek advice from medical experts and relevant government agencies to ensure our staff, volunteers and communities’ health and safety and to get back to business as quickly as possible.”
The lucrative Indian Premier League this year has been postponed indefinitely while an uncertainty is also looming over Men’s Twenty20 World Cup in Australia scheduled in October-November.
“Cricket Australia like all sporting bodies is contemplating a return to play but no one is sure when this will be possible at this stage, and several options are being considered,” CA said.
“We are aware of the effect this would have on Australian cricket and are working hard to proactively handle it.”
Last month the England and Wales Cricket Board announced a 61 million pounds ($75.63 million) assistance package to cope up with the financial effects of the pandemic.
