BCCI Wins The Legal Clash Against Defunct IPL Franchise Deccan Chargers

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has finally won its legal struggle against Deccan Chronicle Holdings (DCHL), the owners of the now-defunct Deccan Chargers of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The Hyderabad-based franchise, which won the second season of the IPL, was dissolved after the 2012 season because the owners failed to submit a bank guarantee to the cricket board.

The bank guarantee required by the board was Rs. 100 crore. DCHL, on the other hand, contested the termination and began a legal process in the Bombay High Court, which could have cost BCCI a huge INR 4,800 crore. However, the Indian cricket board has won the long-running court battle, and officials are delighted.

“We are extremely happy with the development. It has vindicated our position as we had always followed what was in the agreement,” a BCCI official was quoted as saying by Zee5.

The BCCI has won its case against the Deccan Chargers’ owners, DCHL

In July 2020, following damages claimed by the firm of INR 6046 crore plus interest and penalties according to the reports, BCCI was ordered to pay Rs 4800 crore to DCHL. In response to the development in July 2020, a BCCI official stated that an appeal will be filed since the board thought it had a solid case.

Meanwhile, from 2008 to 2012, the Deccan Chargers competed in five IPL seasons. They played a number of strong seasons, and under Adam Gilchrist’s guidance, they even won the championship in 2009. Many notable players, like Andrew Symonds, Rohit Sharma, Pragyan Ojha, and RP Singh, played for the charges. However, they did not return to the competition after 2012, as another Hyderabad franchise, Sunrisers Hyderabad, entered the picture.

SRH, which is owned by the Sun Group, has had a successful run in the IPL, even winning the coveted championship in 2016. In fact, they are the only team to have made the playoffs in each of the previous five IPL seasons. Their effort in the 2021 edition of the system factors, however, hasn’t been as fruitful, as they lost seven of their first eight games before the season was postponed.
