Bangladesh Defers Sri Lanka Tour Due To Covid-19 Pandemic

After the twenty-four hours of postponing the home series of Bangladesh against the team of New Zealand, again Bangladesh has taken the decision to postpone the upcoming Sri Lanka tour to Bangladesh because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Both the Bangladesh and Sri Lanka teams were scheduled to play three Test matches in the period of July- August.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) informed about the postponement of the tour to Sri Lanka Cricket Board (SLC) on Wednesday, which means both Bangladesh as well as Sri Lanka team will not play any Test matches as per the previous plans because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has not declared any commencement of the training of its players in the Shera Bangla National Stadium, which is the cricket’s headquarter of Bangladesh as it is present in the “red zone” area. The positive cases of coronavirus have crossed moreover 100, 000 mark, and 1502 numbers of people are already dead as of 23rd June. Earlier this week, Nazmul Islam, Mashrafe Mortaza as well as the former batsman of Bangladesh Nafees Iqbal, all have tested COVID-19 positive.

To date, this is the fifth postponement of Bangladesh since the month of March. In April, Bangladesh has postponed second test match against Pakistan in Karachi, then in the month of May, the UK and Ireland tour had postponed and after then the home series against Australia, which was scheduled to play in June and also the New Zealand tour, which is scheduled to play in August-September window are also gets postponed.

If we compare Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, then the situation of Sri Lanka is better as here the number of positive cases and deaths is less, but Sri Lanka also postponed a couple of tours. Previously, England team returned to home from the tour of Sri Lanka, South Africa and India also postponed their tours to Sri Lanka.
