The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Thursday announced that the contenders for the maiden World Test Championship will be decided based on the percentage of points earned by each team. The release of the new point system for the WTC standings shows Australia have surpassed India in the points table who were trailing before the new evaluation system.
Australia Surpass India in the ICC World Test Championship
The ramifications in the points system were brought in on the recommendation of the ICC Cricket Committee headed by former Indian leg-spinner and coach Anil Kumble. The ICC have announced that changes were made keeping the Coronavirus pandemic in mind since cricket calendars are affected globally. Anil Kumble proposed the amendment to the governing council after multiple series were affected which resulted in the points table.

India have 360 points after playing four series while Australia have 296 points after playing 3 series so far. According to the new percentage points, Australia stands at 82.2 points while India have 75.0 points to their name which makes them slip at the No.2 spot behind the Aussies.

The final team standings will be determined by the total number of points contested and the total percentage of points won. England and New Zealand are in 3rd and 4th positions with 60.8 and 50.0 percentage points respectively. By August 2021, the qualifier for finals will be announced.

“Both the Cricket Committee and Chief Executives Committee supported the approach of ranking teams based on completed matches and points earned as this reflects their performance and doesn’t disadvantage teams that have been unable to complete all of their matches through no fault of their own,” Manu Sawhney, ICC Chief Executive, said in an official statement. “We explored a whole range of options, but our members felt strongly that we should proceed as planned with the first-ever World Test Championship Final in June next year,” Manu Sawhney added.
ICC has also decided to postpone the 2022 Women’s T20 world cup to 9 February 2023.
