AUS vs SA Who Will Win Match 10 ICC ODI World Cup 2023
There is something about Australia that ignites strong emotions in South Africans. They make no bones that Australia is the team to beat across all formats. Both sides will contest in a high-profile battle at the AB Vajpayee Stadium in Lucknow. It will be the first match to be played at this venue in the World Cup. The Lucknow surface wasn’t the easiest to bat on in the IPL. It will be interesting to see how the surface pans out for this game.
The seeds of a classic rivalry:
South Africa defeated Australia in their debut World Cup appearance in 1992. The Rainbow Nation notched up a comfortable 9-wicket win in that game. But it was the 1999 World Cup that really set the rivalry in motion. In a crucial Super Six game, Australia was chasing a tough score of 270 against South Africa. Herschelle Gibbs, regarded as one of the finest fielders in the game dried a dolly to hand Steve Waugh a costly reprieve. Australia went on to win that game.
The epic semifinal at Edgbaston:
Shaun Pollock bowled a terrific spell to restrict Australia to 213. They started the chase in solid fashion without losing a wicket in the first 10 overs. But the introduction of Shane Warne turned the game on its head. He bowled a ripper to get rid of Gibbs. Warne followed it with another peach to dismiss Gary Kirsten. South Africa was in all sorts of trouble. Jacques Kallis played his part to steady the ship.
But it was the World Cup hero, Lance Klusener, who delivered the telling blows. With 9 needed off the last over, Klusener brought the equation down to 1 off 4. However a complete miscommunication with his partner resulted in a dramatic tie. Australia moved to the finals having beaten South Africa earlier in the tournament. The Proteas are yet to forget this heartbreak.
2007 – A tale of Australian dominance:
The only side that had the potential to stop Australia from winning a third successive World Cup title was South Africa. Their first-round match was played almost a year after the 438-run game. Australia though bossed the match completely. South Africa wanted to exact revenge in the semis but they were blown away for a paltry score. It was 3-1 to Australia at this stage.
2019 – A comeback:
South Africa had a forgettable 2019 World Cup. They were not even in contention for a semifinal berth. Their only moment of reckoning though was defeating Australia in the last league match. South Africa’s cream started coming together at the end of that World Cup.
The recent bout:
South Africa once again got the better of Australia in the recently concluded 5-match ODI series. They came from 0-2 behind to win the series 3-2. Australia has now lost 6 of their last 7 games. They don’t have quality spin bowling options if the pitch aids it. For the first time in a World Cup, it is Australia who start underdogs against an in-form South African team.
