Which Indian Cricketers Retired In 2021

Many of the elite cricketers gave up on the game at different stages of the year. A champion player like Ben Stokes had taken an indefinite break to focus on his mental health. But there were few cricketers who altogether pulled a plug on their cricketing careers.

List of Retired Cricketers In 2021

#5 AB de Villiers

AB de Villiers was arguably one of the greatest batsmen of the current generation. He shocked everyone when he announced his retirement from international cricket in 2018. ABD though vowed to play franchise cricket for as long as he enjoyed the game.

There were constant whispers about him making a potential comeback into international cricket. Post-IPL 2021, ABD out of nowhere announced his retirement from all forms of cricket. He had a good 2-3 years of cricket left in him but ABD thought enough is enough. The game will miss his genius!

#4 Mahmudullah

Mahmudullah along with Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim, and Tamim Iqbal was part of Bangladesh’s golden generation. He was one of the cornerstones of the team across formats. But despite their combined better efforts, they couldn’t propel the side to the next level especially playing overseas.

Their passionate fans always demanded the best from their players. All these factors started taking their toll on players like Mahmudullah who quit the longest format of the game in 2021. His decision to retire from Tests took everyone by surprise. He finished his Test career on a high though.

#3 Unmukt Chand

Unmukt Chand is one of those rare Indian U-19 captains who led India to the World Cup. He captained the champion side in 2012. Chand played a captain’s knock in the finals knocking a brilliant century. But his career sadly couldn’t take off. He failed to post a string of good scores in domestic cricket. Chand couldn’t succeed in The IPL too. He was longer expecting to play for the nation. It all felt like a distant dream. Hence he made the decision to quit Indian cricket in 2021. He will now be plying trades for the USA.

#2 Asghar Afghan

Asghar Afghan was an instrumental figure in Afghanistan cricket. He holds the highest winning percentage among captains in T20Is who led the side in a minimum of 20 games.

Afghan made an emotional decision to retire midway through the T20 World Cup 2021. His decision left his fans perplexed. He could have at least stayed on until the completion of the World Cup. But he was adamant to quit it halfway. It was one of the most shocking retirements of 2021.

#1 Quinton De Kock

Quinton De Kock was one of those cricketers who always spoke his mind. He had stated multiple times that playing in cricketing bubbles isn’t an easy task. His body language always gave away his thoughts. He gave the impression that he was just a step away from leaving the game.

The way he was dismissed in the 2nd innings of the first Test against India at Centurion reflected that all was not well with him. Soon after the game, he announced his retirement from the longest format with immediate effect. De Kock a 54-Tests veteran has surely left the game pretty soon.
