ODI cricket took center stage from the 1975 World Cup. There have been many records that have been created and overhauled since then. Players like Viv Richards, Sachin Tendulkar, Wasim Akram, and Virat Kohli have numerous records associated with their name. While many records get created and broken in a quick span of time, there are a few of them which might remain unbroken. StumpsandBails brings to you 5 such records.
#5 Best economy rate for a bowler [Joel Garner-3.09]
Joel Garner was part of the fearsome bowling attack of the West Indies in the 70s and 80s. He was an outright match-winner. Garner’s most memorable performance in ODI’s happened in the 1979 World Cup final when he took 5-39. This bowling performance remains the best in a World Cup final. He holds the record for having the best economy rate (3.09) among bowlers who have bowled more than 1000 balls in ODI’s. In this day and age when the bats have become bigger and the boundaries have become smaller, it is difficult for any bowler to break this record.
#4 Herschelle Gibbs’ most runs in an ODI over
Before Yuvraj Singh hammered Stuart Broad for 6 sixes in an over in T20 World Cup, it was Herschelle Gibbs who smashed 6 sixes in an ODI against the Netherlands in the 2007 ODI World Cup. This is one record that certainly can’t be broken until and unless a bowler bowls illegitimate deliveries. The best a batsman can do is to equal this monstrous feat.
#3 Sachin Tendulkar’s 15,310 runs as an opener
Sachin Tendulkar is arguably the best ODI opener of all time. He has singlehandedly won matches for India while opening the batting. His amalgamation of 15,310 runs an opener is too big an achievement for any player to come close to. Tendulkar averaged an insane 48.30 in 340 innings, scoring those 15,310 runs. The second best currently is Sourav Ganguly who notched up 9146 runs an opener. One can clearly see the gap between the best and the 2nd best.
#2 Chaminda Vaas’ bowling figures in an innings [8-19]
Sri Lankan pacer, Chaminda Vaas created history when he picked up 8 wickets in an ODI. Vaas ran through the Zimbabwean batting lineup like a surgeon. His ability to swing the ball both ways made him a lethal bowler. None of the bowlers have managed to pick 8 wickets in an innings apart from Vaas. His figures of 8-19 against Zimbabwe in 2001 is a gold standard in ODI bowling.
#1 Rohit Sharma’s highest score in an ODI [264]
Rohit Sharma’s career changed completely when he became an opener. He is the only batsmen to have scored 3 double centuries in ODI’s. He demolished the Sri Lankan bowling attack at Eden Gardens, Kolkata in 2014 when he notched up the highest ODI score ever (264). This batting feat seems insurmountable and will be a record that may well be out of reach for many.
