Easily defeating Yorkshire, surrey win the 21st championship

Surrey First Innings

The White Rose bowled out once more for 208 with Dan Worrall getting four for 61 as they started the day 65 runs down at 89 for two in their second innings after the dismissal for 179 in response to Surrey’s first-innings 333.

Match Update

Yorkshire avoided the humiliation of losing innings, but on day three, it was unavoidable, Rory Burns scored 30* off 16 balls as Surrey reached the goal in just six overs and, thanks to Hampshire’s defeat, won the County Championship for the first time since 2018.

Star Man

The foundation of Surrey’s win lay by an outstanding outing with the bat. In this case, Ollie Pope’s 136 in their 333 all out while serving his country of birth, England.

This was followed by a team effort with the ball, twice, as Tom Lawes, Kemar Roach, Jordan Clark, and Dan Worrall swarmed.

First season as Coach

While acknowledging the need to examine the current system, Batty, who is in his first season as head coach. Is apprehensive of changes to the domestic game that might made make more room for the Hundred and franchise tournaments.

Coach’s Argument

“I personally think it would be too short. I don’t think there would be enough games to get the required result and integrity into a County Championship season.”

“All the scheduling stuff, and fixtures and those sorts of thing, it is a fine balance.”

“County Cricket is essentially for the betterment of the England Test team and the England side, so yeah, I agree it needs to be looked at. But 10 is too few.”
