Where is Asia Cup 2022 happening?
Due to Sri Lanka’s political unpredictability and recent developments, the Asia Cup’s future appears to be changing on a daily basis. This suggests that the status quo may no longer apply. Strong signs point to the possibility of assigning the UAE to host the six-team regional competition instead of the island country.
The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) has received information on the 16-day tournament from a number of its member boards, and these attempts to move it have already begun. The Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) and the American Cricket Council (ACC) are rumored to have spoken. The championship is anticipated to take place from August 26 to September 11 and is likely to be kept in the loop by the SLC.
The situation around the SLC has changed since a few weeks ago when the Lanka board, under duress from the government, decided to host the tournament. However, since the country’s president departed and a new President was elected a week ago, things have significantly shifted. With violent rallies against the political system, the nation has been on a boil.
A representative of the ACC told Cricbuzz on Saturday that hosting the tournament “is being felt as not being proper in such a setting” (July 16). An SLC representative reiterated the opinion and said that a shift is quite likely to occur.
By the way, the SLC is now hosting the Pakistan squad and has previously hosted Australia for a complete series.
But a statement released by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) early on Saturday morning seemed to paint a different picture. “Our top choice is to cheer on Sri Lanka and have the Asia Cup there. Sri Lanka would suffer a severe sporting and financial loss if this tournament weren’t held there. The most recent Australian trip to Sri Lanka was uneventful.
As we are in close contact with Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) and our embassy there, there have also been no problems with the ongoing Pakistan tour of Sri Lanka. Our conversations with ACC representatives have indicated that the competition is currently on track since they are closely monitoring the issue, and we will back their choice, according to PCB CEO Faisal Hasnain.
Also mentioned was Pakistan’s hosting of the following edition. The 50-over Asia Cup will be important for us because it will help us get ready to host the ICC Champions Trophy in 2025 at our facilities and sites. Additionally, the Asia Cup will prepare the competing teams for the ICC Cricket World Cup that will take place in India later that year, according to a PCB official.
The ACC’s current attention is on the current edition, which will be replaced in more than a year. Jay Shah, the ACC president, is reportedly in charge. A statement could be made soon.
