T20s are now a norm but there was a time when it was a new format and no one knew what to expect from it. It has been a journey that has given us memories that are unforgettable. We have had tears of joy and wrinkles because of anguish. Let’s take a look at 5 most Memorable Moments in ICC T20 World Cup history:
MS Dhoni’s Lightening Run Out
MS Dhoni is not just a name, its a feeling for his fans, and his exploits on the cricket field are nothing short of legendary. In a Super 10 encounter in the 2016 season, India faced off against Bangladesh and gave them 147 runs to chase. At 19.3 overs, Bangladesh’s cricket squad had a rather assured appearance as they were 146/6. What happened next always makes Indian fans feel ecstatic and crush Bangladeshi fans’ hearts. Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah were both dismissed by Hardik Pandya in two straight deliveries. Leaving Bangladesh needing just two runs to win off the final delivery.
Shuvagata Hom was delivered a wide delivery by Hardik Pandya, and he completely missed it. While MS Dhoni was dismantling the stumpwork with one glove, Mustafizur, who was rushing towards the danger end, was discovered short of the crease. Dhoni and his lightning-fast gloves were again the winner and India crushed Bangladesh in the thriller.
Braithwait hitting 4 Sixes in Final Four
It was a scene to watch. Audience were on the edge of their seats and in order to help the West Indies win their second T20 World Cup trophy, Carlos Brathwaite smashed Ben Stokes for four consecutive sixes earning him the “Remember the Name” moment.
In the 2016 T20 World Cup final, Carlos Brathwaite emerged as the West Indies‘ surreal hero. Brathwaite was a rookie at the time and had only played seven T20 Internationals prior to the World Cup final. The odds were against him when he faced Ben Stokes, who had to defend 19 runs off the final six deliveries.
The cricket community was shocked by what transpired in the final over’s final four deliveries, which brought Brathwaite the recognition and acclaim he deserved. The former WI T20I skipper hit Stokes for four consecutive sixes to lead WI to their second T20 WC championship victory.
Pakistan taking 5 wickets in 6 deliveries
The 2010 World T20 was particularly memorable for England as the game’s creators finally won a World Cup. But what happened in a match between Pakistan and Australia left everyone aghast. The spectators was astonished by Mohammad Amir’s remarkable maiden over. The incident occurred during a Group A match against Australia, who had 191/5 at the conclusion of the 19th over and were attempting to surpass 200.
However, Amir’s yorkers were effective on the day as they led to five wickets and a dot. His first ball had Brad Haddin caught at short third man. His second yorked Mitchell Johnson, and his sixth clean-bowled Shaun Tait. In between Mike Hussey and Steve Smith were both run out by Kamran Akmal. Australia went from 191/5 to 191 all out in the matter of six balls.
Pakistan, however, were not able to successfully chase the target as they were bowled out for 157, thereby giving Australia a 34-run victory.
1st ever Bowl Out for Tie Breaker
A bowl-out is wherein five bowlers from each side bowl to an unprotected wicket at the other end. This used to be the method used to break ties in Twenty20 matches before the Super Over. For the purpose of helping the bowler establish their bearings, the fielding side was permitted to hire a wicketkeeper.
2007 World Cup was in itself a celebration of new things. With two balls remaining in the 142-run chase, Pakistan tied the game before Sreesanth dismissed Misbah-ul-Haq with the penultimate ball. When Misbah pushed the final ball and started to sprint, Yuvraj Singh’s throw was too quick for him, and he was run out. A tie-breaker was used in a global cricket competition for the first time.
Umar Gul, Sohail Tanvir, Yasir Arafat, Shahid Afridi, and Mohammad Asif were the nominees for Pakistan, while Sreesanth, Harbhajan Singh, Virender Sehwag, Irfan Pathan, and – to some people’s surprise – Robin Uthappa were the nominees for India.
India went on to hit wickets in all the balls while Pakistan missed all of them. The results were clear. India won the match and it was some celebration to remember.
Yuvraj singh 6 sixes
Yuvraj’s innings was a phenomenon that changed world cricket. The flashy batter hit six sixes in Stuart Broad’s over and took only 12 balls to reach fifty, which is still the fastest in the T20 competition. When Robin Uthappa’s wicket fell, Yuvraj was put in to bat, and his late flourish enabled India to score 218 runs. India eventually defeated England by 18 runs in the game.
Yuvraj destroyed Broad in the 19th over of India’s inning. He hit him for six sixes and pushing India’s total beyond the 200-run barrier.
Yuvraj’s clash with Flintoff is instigated him to start his power hitting and there was no stopping after that. Yuvraj went all over the park to send the ball into the stands and beyond all around the park. It was a moment to remember and never forget. It set the bench mark for great expectations from the T20 format in its inaugural season.
