Cricket South Africa unveiled the South Africa Men’s Squad for the forthcoming multi-format tour of England on Wednesday. The tour will begin in Chester-le-Street on July 19 and will include 3 T20I, 3 ODIs, and 3 Test matches.
Following an elbow injury sustained during the most recent T20Is in India, Temba Bavuma has been ruled out of South Africa’s all-format tour of England and two T20 Internationals against Ireland. In Bavuma’s absence, Keshav Maharaj and David Miller have been selected as the ODI and T20I teams’ respective captains.
In the fourth T20I match against India, Bavuma hurt both soft tissue and bone in his left arm while diving to get a single. He won’t need surgery and expects to heal in around eight weeks to ground be on the ground for World Cup.
Kagiso Rabada, the lead pacer, has been given a break from the ODI team in an effort to balance his workload. Gerald Coetzee has been called up for the first time to the T20I team.
The selection convener of South Africa Cricket Victor Mpitsang said in a statement, “The T20 format is a high priority for us at the moment. We are looking to give opportunities to players that we are interested in seeing and working out the best combinations, while also trying to balance our desire to maintain enough consistency within the setup that the players are used to playing together as a team by the time they reach Australia for the World Cup.”
