Murali Vijay set to return to competitive cricket

Murali Vijay is set to make a comeback to competitive cricket after almost two years of a break as the Indian batter has decided to participate in the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) scheduled to kick off on June 23.

The stalwart in Tamil Nadu has expressed his desire to play as long as possible after completing his much-needed personal break.

The 38-year-old opening batter, Vijay last played the T20 game in the jersey of Chennai Super Kings, against Delhi Capitals, in the 2020 Indian Premier League in Dubai.

It was difficult for me personally because I wanted to play. But I had injuries and my personal life was going at a fast pace. I wanted to slow it down and see where I was standing as an individual. I wanted to reflect on myself and that’s why I felt that [a] break was required and needed for me at that particular time. TNCA has understood that and they’ve given me this beautiful platform to come back and play the game,” he said.

He played his last game wearing an Indian test jersey in the 2018 India tour of Australia, which India won by 2-1. The right-handed stated that he wanted to take a break. Although right now he does not have any personal goals and wants to enjoy his game.

“The two-year break was to reflect on the exact point you are saying [India comeback]. At the end of the day, you have to be realistic with your targets. I pretty much don’t have any aim at the moment. I just want to play cricket and enjoy this phase of my life at this point. And see where it takes me, with the help of TNCA,” Vijay said.

Vijay has played 61 Tests, 17 ODIs, and 9 T20Is for the Indian team. He has smashed almost 4490 runs, including 12 centuries and 16 half-centuries so far wearing an Indian jersey.

The Tamil Nadu Premier League will be played from June 23 to July 31.
