Over the years we have seen the Australians showing dominance amongst foreigners in the Indian Premier League. Along with West Indies hard hitters, they are the most sought-after players hailed for their batting, fielding, and especially bowling.
There is a long list of players such as Shane Warne, Matthew Hayden, Mike Hussey, Adam Gilchrist, Ricky Ponting, Brett Lee, Andrew Symonds, David Hussey, and many more who played the league and left a mark that is still recalled and cherished. Such is the impact of Australia on IPL.
Recently we saw a shift where a lot of importance was given to West Indies players too for their hard-hitting and deceiving bowling but it doesn’t mean the Australians are far behind the list. This year 47 Australian players made it to the final IPL Mega Auction List and of those 47, 16 were able to find themselves a franchise that demanded them. There are a few star names that were sold for big money while others were bought for base price. Here in this article, we’ll look at Australian players’ performance in the IPL 2022.
We Look At Australian Players Performance In IPL 2022:
Playing for RCB, Maxwell missed a couple of initial matches due to his wedding ceremonies. After he joined the team, apart from a few games towards the beginning, he hasn’t been able to do much with either bat or bowl. In the 7 innings he has played, he scored 157 at a low average of 26.17. On the bowling front, he has only bowled 9 overs and was able to take just a single wicket. He hasn’t really contributed to RCB’s win this season and that brings a lot of questions about his retention in the squad for a huge sum of money.
Another addition to the list of retention, Marcus Stoinis found himself placed in the new team even before the auction for a big price. With the bat, his performance has been below average. He may have not gotten enough chance to come out and bat as he missed the initial 3 matches due to national commitment but in his 6 innings, he has scored just 90 runs where he was not out in 2. One of the matches required him to play big should as his role is more likely of a finisher, but he wasn’t able to make it happen. Even with the ball, he has only taken 1 wicket and his form is a concern for LSG as the competition is getting tougher.
Josh Hazlewood (7.75cr) :
Josh is a key member of the Australian fast bowler’s trio and his inclusion in RCB’s camp has been a blessing for them. He fills in for an important place of a wicket-taking fast bowler who is economical as well. In the 6 matches he has played, he took 10 wickets at a good average. He is a valuable member of RCB and the team would want to continue this way.
Pat Cummins (7.25cr):
After his explosive joint-fastest 50 of IPL, Pat Cummins hasn’t really been the star of KKR. From the beginning of the tournament, he conceded big runs and wasn’t as effective in taking wickets which made the management to drop him from playing 11. He has played 4 matches for the franchise and was able to take just 4 wickets at an economy of 12 and an average of 47.50. This is definitely not the performance expected of the number 1 test bowler in the world.
Mitchell Marsh (6.50cr):
Another faltering Australian star in IPL 2022 is Mitchell Marsh. The hero of the T20 WC final for Australia is yet to make a mark in this year’s IPL. There has been a blanket of problems that occurred with Marsh with his late joining to the squad and then delay with the COVID situation in the camp, he has scored 64 runs in 3 innings at an average of 21.33. Mitchell is the player who is expected to bring balance to Delhi’s side but his bad performance and time with adjustment to the IPL climate are taking his team nowhere.
David Warner (6.25cr):
One of the most loved Australian in India, David is a great inclusion to Delhi’s side that makes him one of the most important players on the team. Of the 7 matches he played in this season, he scored 264 runs at an average of 44 and strike rate of 157. Other than him, there hasn’t been much contribution from his teammates with the bat and that puts pressure on David to perform better. He has all the skills to take Delhi to playoffs even at this stage.
Daniel Sams :
We have all seen the condition of Mumbai Indians in IPL 2022. The performance of Daniel Sams has been quite equivalent to that. Of the 6 matches he has played, he has taken 7 wickets and scored 21 runs. The team would have required much more from him as there is already a tough competition between foreign players to be in the playing XI in Mumbai Camp. Sams can definitely improve his stats.
