Audience ‘handover’ Guinness Book of World Records Award to BCCI; Jay Shah Delights

A few days ago the social media platform was abuzz with some trolls pointing out a low-attendance turnout for a 3rd ODI match between Australia and England at Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Contrary to this, the Narendra Modi Stadium which holds more than 10,000 seating capacity that of MCG recorded a big achievement. The Board for Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) has achieved what could be termed as one of the rare feats where the audience played a pivotal role.

On Sunday, the apex cricket board announced that it has won the Guinness Book of World Records for the largest attendance during a T20 match. The match was held as part of the 2022 Indian Premier League finale at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

BCCI on its official Twitter account said a proud moment for everyone as India creates the Guinness World Record. “This one is for all our fans for their unmatched passion and unwavering support. Congratulations to @GCAMotera and @IPL,” it said.

Sharing his happiness, BCCI secretary Jay Shah tweeted extremely delighted & proud to receive the Guinness World Record for the largest attendance at a T20 match when 101,566 people witnessed the epic @IPL final at @GCAMotera ‘s magnificent Narendra Modi Stadium on 29 May 2022. A big thanks to our fans for making this possible! @BCCI, he said.

The newly renovated Motera venue was inaugurated in February 2021 and it has hosted two matches; one being the second qualifier and two being the final of the 15th season of IPL 2022 where 101,566 people witnessed the show.

The stadium earlier had a seating capacity of housing 49,000 fans when it was constructed in 1982. The refurbished stadium now has 110,000 seating capacity which is double the capacity of the old stadium and holds 10,000 more people than Australia’s iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground.
