India Drops In WTC Rankings, After a big loss against the English team at Edgbaston on Tuesday, the Indian cricket team has been entitled to suffer another big disaster. The International Cricket Council (ICC) imposed a punishment against India for slow over-rate during India Vs England’s rescheduled fifth test match.
The decision came after ICC’s Elite Panel observed India falling short by two overs by the end of day 5 of the fifth-test match. Apart from losing the points, the visitors were also levied a fine of 40 percent match fees as a punishment, according to a statement released by ICC on Tuesday.

After posting a big total of 416 in the first innings, Indian batsmen have failed in achieving a similar good number in the second innings. The tourists failed in capitalizing on it though with the hosts completely pulling off their highest successful chase with two sessions to spare.
Post the match, Captain Jasprit Bumrah emphasized India’s poor batting in the second innings where it had lost 10 wickets by scoring just 245. “I think yesterday we fell short with the bat, and we had to come back with the ball…That is the phase where we let the opposition in, and the momentum kept shifting away from us,” he said.
Finally, India was defeated by seven wickets with England chasing down a record 378, which is termed to be their highest-successful run chase in Test history. Jonny Bairstow’s whopping 114 runs and Joe Root’s unbeaten 142 in the fourth innings helped England to reach the shore easily.
The ICC said according to Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, players are fined 20 percent of their match fee for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time.
“In addition, as per Article 16.11.2 of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) playing conditions, a side is penalized one point for each over short. Since India fell short by two overs after time allowances were taken into consideration, they have docked two WTC points,” it said.
The punishment came after David Boon of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees imposed the sanction based on the on-field umpires Aleem Dar and Richard Kettleborough, third umpire Marais Erasmus and fourth umpire Alex Wharf leveled the charge.
The penalty comes as a blow, with India chasing one of the top two spots in the WTC table, which will see the side qualify for the final in 2023.
