Due to a hip injury, Heather Knight, the captain of the England Women’s team, may not be able to guide her squad in the next Commonwealth Games (CWG) in 2022. During the first T20I match against South Africa, the starting batter suffered an injury.
As a result, Knight was unable to play in the second T20I match on July 23 and is expected to sit out the third T20I game as well. Despite the absence of their permanent captain, Team England, led by interim captain Nat Sciver, has already won the series and will want to do the same in the decisive game.
The hip joint of Heather Knight is irritated. Prior to the Commonwealth Games, she has had an injection and will be monitored and treated as needed. The manager of the England women’s team gave an update on Knight’s injury and stated that she will miss today’s third T20I as a precaution.
Among all the captains of the England women’s team, Knight has had the greatest success. As beating Team India by nine runs at the Lord’s Cricket Ground in 2017, the English team, led by her, went on to win the World Cup. However, after Australia went on to win the 50-over World Cup in 2022, the English team was unable to defend their title.
The English national team is a part of Group B for the CWG 2022, along with South Africa, Sri Lanka, and New Zealand. Australia, Barbados, and Pakistan make up Group A alongside Team India. Since every game will be played in the 20-over format, it will be the first time that women’s cricket is featured in the CWG.
In the meantime, the England team has already revealed its roster for the next competition and will bet on themselves to take home a gold.
England’s CWG squad: Heather Knight (c), Nat Sciver (vc), Maia Bouchier, Katherine Brunt, Alice Capsey, Kate Cross, Freya Davies, Sophia Dunkley, Sophie Ecclestone, Sarah Glenn, Amy Jones, Freya Kemp, Bryony Smith, Issy Wong, Danni Wyatt.
