England’s New White-Ball Captain: Given that he was Morgan’s vice-captain and had shown to be one of the best white-ball players in the world, the wicketkeeper-batter appeared to be the logical choice.
In the first ODI between England and the Netherlands earlier this month, Jos Buttler, fresh off an IPL season in which he scored four hundred for Rajasthan Royals, smashed an unbeaten 162 off 70 balls to lead England to a 232-run triumph.
On July 7, India will play England in the first of three T20 internationals, which will be followed by three one-day internationals against the same team. The 31-year-old will serve as captain throughout that time.
In the past, Buttler has led England in games when Morgan has been injured, most notably in the third and final ODI against the Netherlands, where he presided over an eight-wicket victory that sealed a 3-0 series victory.
Eoin Morgan’s tremendous leadership over the previous seven years is something for which Buttler expressed his genuine gratitude and thanks. “It has been the most unforgettable time for all those involved. It’s been wonderful to play for him since he’s been such an inspiring leader. He taught me a lot of things, many of which I’ll use in my current position.
“It is an honor to succeed Eoin, and I am motivated to take on the challenges that lie ahead by the vibrant state that he has left English white-ball cricket in.
“The white-ball squads have great depth, and I’m excited to captain the sides in the next series against India, which begins next week, and against South Africa, which begins in July.
“It is the highest honor to lead your nation, and whenever I’ve had the chance to do so in the past, I’ve cherished it. I am really excited to lead this team forward.”
Following his performance against the Netherlands, Morgan declared Buttler the finest white-ball cricketer on the globe.
