England eye series win against New Zealand

The ‘new era’ England team will aim to carry forward the winning momentum to secure the test series against New Zealand when they face each other in the second test match, starting on June 10.

England is 1-0 up in the three-match test series after a five-wicket win over the current World test Champions New Zealand at Lord’s last week.

The first match of the series was very intensive as in the first innings both teams failed to cross the 150 mark. However, New Zealand then posted 285 in the second innings to give 277 runs target to the host, but they lost the game courtesy of Joe Root’s unbeaten knock of 115 runs.

New Zealand, who won the toss and opted to bat first, looked befuddled in front of swing star James Anderson, who dismissed both openers. The ‘new era’ English team bowlers then carried on the momentum and bowled out the visitors at just for 32.

In reply, England got off to a good start in their first innings with a 59-run first-wicket stand, and were on the verge of posting a huge total against already struggling Kane Williamson’s side. But, Jamieson removed Jim Crawley when the host team were at 59 and after that, England only managed to add 83 more runs on board and were all out at 141.

New Zealand’s faced another bad start in the second innings when their top order collapsed

In the second innings, despite yet another top-order collapse, but the solid 195-run partnership between Tom Blundell (96) and Daryl Mitchell (108) for the fifth wicket, helped New Zealand put a decent score on board as New Zealand gave England 277 runs target to win the first test.

England started the chase in trouble as they lost their four main batters at just 69 runs.

However, England’s current skipper Ben Stokes and former captain Joe Root added a much needed 90 runs to put their team back on track. Stokes, though returned to the pavilion after scoring 54, but Root took the whole responsibility to his shoulders and lead the England side to victory with an unbeaten 115 runs.

The second match of the series will start from June 10 at Trent Bridge in Nottingham.
