Shakib Al Hasan As Test Captain: The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is now mulling to re-appoint Shakib Al Hasan to his position as the Test skipper. The seasoned all-rounder has the greatest experience of any player in the squad and has already served as captain, making him the most apparent option for the position. The management, on the other hand, is worried about the availability of the experienced all-rounder.
After being defeated in the Test series by Sri Lanka, Mominul Haque, who had taken over the leadership from Shakib Al Hasan in 2019, has decided to step down from his position. Haque has explained his decision to step down as captain by pointing to a current downturn in his performance as the explanation for his choice.
The chairperson of the BCB, Nazmul Hasan, is optimistic that Shakib will be appointed as captain, but he is uncertain as to whether or not the once number one regarded all-rounder in Test cricket would be available.
We need to be sure about Shakib’s availability: Nazmul
“Shakib can be a skipper in any format. But we need to know whether he will play or not (Test cricket regularly). If he says that he won’t go or choose a format then it will be a problem. Shakib was our skipper and there is no doubt about his captaincy. But we also need to be sure about his availability”, said Nazmul.
Shakib, who only just made his return to Test cricket in the recently completed series versus Sri Lanka, is the leading candidate for the position of captain of the Bangladesh cricket team. But, the lefty’s absence from the sport over the last few years has been a hurdle to his effectiveness in this endeavor.
After receiving a one-year suspension from the ICC in 2019, Shakib, who had previously served as captain of the Bangladesh Test squad on many occasions, handed over the reins of leadership to Mominul Haque.
In Nazmul Hasan’s opinion, the BCB needs to consider the matter’s significant thought before settling on a course of action. “He cannot make last-minute decisions about his availability when he is the captain. We have to discuss it with him first. We cannot make someone a captain on a whim and so have to take a well-thought-out (decision),” Nazmul added further.
Following his strong batting performance in the recent series versus Sri Lanka, Bangladesh’s Liton Das is also expected to be in the discussion for the position. This is in addition to Shakib, who is already in the mix.
