After electing to bat, Australia faced a rough start as they lost David Warner cheaply due to superb angling delivery by Kasun Rajitha.

The second opener Usman Khawaja then did a 55-run partnership with Marnus Labuschagne to run the ship further. Ramesh Mendis, however, got rid of Khawaja with his magical delivery to bowl him.

Ex-skipper of Australia, Steve Smith, who walked in to bat at no.4, soak all the pressure and resumed the journey with ease. Both Labuschagne and Steve Smith added 134 for the fourth wicket and help Australia cross 200 mark before Labuschagne got out after scoring 104.

At the end of day 1 play, the visitors were at 298 for 5. With Smith and Alex Hales remained unbeaten at the crease.

However, in the morning session of day 2, Sri Lankan bowlers took no time and bowled the visitors out for 364. Steve Smith remained the highest scorer of Australia’s innings with an unbeaten 145.

For Sri Lanka, the debutant Prabath Jayasuriya took the highest number of wickets (6). Kasun Rajitha bagged 2 wickets. While two other debutants Kamindu Mendis and Maheesh Theekshana took a wicket each.

Jayasuriya, Mendis, and Theekshana were all three called up to play their first match for Sri Lanka after the hosts lost the first game inside three days in Galle.

Angelo Mathews has made a comeback to help Sri Lanka’s effort to win the series-tying match. Mathews was forced to withdraw from the first test after testing positive for COVID-19.
