Rohit Sharma’s Captaincy Update:

India’s returning captain Rohit Sharma said that it was difficult for him to watch the Edgbaston Test from the sidelines as the team he was to captain lost by seven wickets, wasting a chance to secure an elusive series win in England. In the lead-up to the England series, Rohit caught COVID-19. He admitted that he suffered from his symptoms for the first few days, but that his health steadily improved over the past few days, allowing him to play in the next white-ball series.

Rohit said on Wednesday that it was difficult to watch the Test game from the stands, on July 6. “Missing games is never a simple scenario, especially one that was so crucial for us that it might have made or broken the series. But speaking of the symptoms, I was having some trouble for a few days. However, I’m glad to be back on my feet and feeling good as I anticipate this T20 series, which will certainly be followed by the ODI series as well. The most essential thing is that it’s always good to start playing again. I can’t wait to rejoin the team and get back on the field.

“My recovery has been very good. It’s been 8-9 days since I got COVID. We’ve seen that every player that gets COVID responds differently. I don’t know what’ll happen in the future but it all looks good now. I started training three days ago. That’s why I decided to play in this game, because body wise I feel good. Also, I have no symptoms, [got] tested two-three times also, they’re all negative.”

The first thing Rohit did was communicate with interim coach VVS Laxman, who was accompanying the T20 team to Ireland and to the warm-up matches against Northamptonshire and Derbyshire while the Test was taking place. “I only wanted to comprehend what had been going on with the squad throughout this time.

“Today was the first day I joined the team. They’ve been in Ireland and played a couple of practice games as well. So just trying to understand what sort of mindset the boys are in, and what the preparations have been like for each individual. It was just about catching up on those things that I wasn’t part of. So obviously it’s always nice to understand what’s happening with the team.”

In the crucial lead-up to this year’s T20 World Cup, Rohit is back to captain India, beginning with this week’s series against and in England. Winning the series was crucial, even if Rohit acknowledged that decisions will be made with the World Cup in Australia in mind.

“Naturally, keeping an eye on the World Cup is a must… However, I wouldn’t argue that it is only practiced since every game for India is important to us. Therefore, we want to come here and check off every box we have to ensure that we do our task. We want to make sure we finish the job here as well, despite our desire to keep an eye on the World Cup “added Rohit.
