Martin Guptill released from New Zealand Central Contract

New Zealand Release Martin Guptill

Martin Guptill the third New Zealand player freed from a Central Contract

This is shocking to see veteran players like Guptill, Boult, and others leaving the central contracts. Guptill after recently losing his spot in both of New Zealand’s white & red ball teams, Martin Guptill has become the newest player to be released from their central contract.

Guptill was a player in the T20 World Cup, but he had been unable to play since Finn Allen was chosen to bat first. Additionally, he was left from the roster for the current series against India.

New Zealand picked Finn Allen over Martin Guptill

The selection committee no longer favors the 36-year-old Guptill, who is the top T20 run scorer for New Zealand and the third-highest one-day run scorer, as they chose the fresh prospect, Finn Allen, over him against India and during the most recent World Cup in Australia.

Big Moves Planned by Martin Guptill

Along with Trent Boult and Colin de Grandhomme, he declined offers for a central contract in favour of lucrative deals in domestic T20 competitions.

The Melbourne Stars selected Boult with the third pick overall in the KFC BBL Draft. The Adelaide Strikers chose de Grandhomme, surprising the New Zealand cricket officials. Guptill’s move comes with a top-order batter position and currently, two BBL clubs are looking for an opener and this could be an opportunity for Guptill.

Martin Guptill’s Comments

Talking in a recent statement the veteran opener said that “Playing for my country has been a massive honour, and I’m grateful to everyone within the Black Caps and New Zealand Cricket for their support. But, equally, I’m realistic enough to understand the need to consider my options in the current circumstances.”

He further stated “With this release, I’m still available for New Zealand. I have the chance to explore other opportunities and I also get to spend more time with my family which is important.” (Source – ICC)

New Zealand Chief’s Comments

New Zealand Cricket chief executive David White said “We understand Martin’s position. He’s been a fantastic batsman for us for a long period of time. And we certainly don’t wish to stand in his way as he explores other opportunities. Martin’s been a giant of the white ball game. A committed and well-respected member of the Black Caps. He has earned the right to play out his career on his own terms.”

The Chief concluded by saying “He leaves his contract with our best wishes.” (Source – ICC)
