Renuka Singh – India
- 18 ODI wickets at 14.88, economy 4.62
- 22 T20I wickets at 23.95, economy 6.50
The year for the Cricketer:
The right-arm bowler claimed 40 wickets for her country in 2022 in just 29 matches across the two white-ball formats, filling the void of the great Jhulan Goswami.
Renuka was very effective in the ODI game, taking 18 wickets at just 14.88 per game. Eight of which came in two matches against England and seven of which came in India’s series versus Sri Lanka.
Eight wickets were taken by Renuka during the seven T20I matches she played in during the year. And her performances at the Commonwealth Games and Asia Cup demonstrated that she is no coward when it comes to tournament play. In 11 games, she took 17 wickets for an economy of just 5.21.
Able to swing the ball or find deviation off the surface. Renuka will likely be one of India’s most dependable bowlers in years to come.
Some Memorable performances by the Cricketer:
Early in cricket’s comeback to the Commonwealth Games, Renuka stunned the crowd by taking four wickets of the best top order in the tournament.
Alyssa Healy was caught at point after Meg Lanning’s fake cut shot was edged to Deepti Sharma at slip by the swing bowler. Beth Mooney was attacked by a nip-backer after she chomped on. And Tahlia McGrath was then defeated by an in-swinging hoop shot.
Renuka finished with 4/18 with 16 dot balls, though as Australia stumbled to 34/4, the eventual champions went on to chase down India’s 154.
Darcie Brown – Australia
- Two Test wickets at 28.50
- 10 ODI wickets at 24.50, economy 4.90
- 12 T20I wickets at 22.83, economy 6.20
The year for the Cricketer:
Tipped to push the speed barriers in the Women’s game, Brown’s potential as Australia spearhead is slowly being realised, as shown by her 24 international wickets in 2022.
Brown began the dramatic Test match between Australia and England by taking a wicket in each innings. She then switched her attention to the ODI series as part of the Women’s Ashes, taking 4/34 to completely destroy the long-time rival in Adelaide.
With two three-wicket hauls against New Zealand and India on the way to the team’s trophy-winning campaign, Brown mimicked the performance at the Cricket World Cup.
In the shortest format, Brown was a consistent performer, taking wickets in 10 of her 13 appearances, including all but one of Australia’s Commonwealth Games campaigns.
Some Memorable performances by the Cricketer:
Australia only scored 205/9 against England in the first ODI, so the bowlers had to step up, and they did so admirably.
Together with her new-ball partner Megan Schutt, who took 2/39, Brown took opener Tammy Beaumont, Heather Knight, and Nat Sciver caught and bowled to end a crucial stand.
Brown returned to trap Sophie Ecclestone lbw, as Australia held on by 27 runs.
Alice Capsey – England
- 80 ODI runs at 20.00, strike rate 94.11
- 234 T20I runs at 33.42, strike rate 127.86, one wicket.
The year for the Cricketer:
Making headlines as an England debutant at just 17 years of age. Alice Capsey took to international cricket making 119 runs across her first three T20I outings, at a strike rate well over a run a ball.
In order to secure a solid start to her team’s home Commonwealth Games campaign, she scored two of those runs early on. Including a half-century off only 37 balls against South Africa.
Capsey continued to score runs during England’s home T20I series against India. and soon after received an ODI call-up.
The right-aggressiveness will be a defining characteristic of English cricket. Her off-spin work will undoubtedly be used more frequently.
Some Memorable performances by the Cricketer:
Although Capsey had the composure of a player with 100 games under his belt. Many would have been pardoned from giving in under the pressure of being thrown into the fire at No. 3 in Birmingham 2022.
Capsey, who entered the match at 10/1 after Sophia Dunkley’s injury, blasted seven fours and a six. To ensure that the tide switched in the hosts’ favor. England eventually prevailed by 26 runs.
As a result of her effort, Capsey joined the legendary Sarah Taylor as the only other player to score fifty runs for England while still a teenager.
Yastika Bhatia – India
- 376 ODI runs at 25.06, strike rate 73.29
- 49 T20I runs at 12.25, strike rate 80.32
The year for the Cricketer:
A reliable performer in the 50-over format, Bhatia, 22, provided a number of solid performances that laid the groundwork for India’s middle order in 2022.
Prior to his impressive half-centuries against Australia and Bangladesh. Bhatia posted scores of 41 and 31 in the run-up to the Cricket World Cup. Bhatia continued to score fifty-plus runs during India’s away ODI series against England in Hove. And he will undoubtedly continue to appear on India’s roster for many years to come.
Some Memorable performances by the Cricketer:
A decent yardstick for any women’s batter is runs against the all-conquering Aussies. Which is even more admirable when you play in a worldwide event and lose two of your colleagues early.
In a strong rebuild, Bhatia and Mithali Raj at Eden Park put together a 130-run partnership, scoring six boundaries in the process. And bringing the side to 158/3 in the 32nd over of the game. Bhatia surpassed as the top scorer in the innings by her captain as India went on to hit 277.
India pipped at the post by the Aussies. Who chased down the total with just three balls to spare.
