Today marks the 53rd birthday of Shane Warne, who ranks second all-time in Test wickets. Former Australian legend Shane Warne is regarded as one of the best spinners in the game’s history and had a legendary career.

Shane Warne was born in Victoria on September 13, 1969. Warne made his Test debut against India in 1992 in Sydney and is regarded as one of the best spinners in the history of cricket. A year later, in Wellington, he played against New Zealand in his first ODI. He never played international T20I cricket. However, in the inaugural season of the 2008 Indian Premier League (IPL), he guided Rajasthan Royals to a championship win.

Warne became the first bowler in the history of Test cricket to take 600 wickets. He later became the first bowler to take 700 wickets. 708 wickets were the total for Shane Warne’s Test career. This record was only broken by Muttiah Muralitharan, who returned with 800 wickets in the test format.

After Muttiah Muralitharan of Sri Lanka, Shane Warne is the only bowler to have 1000 wickets in ODIs and Tests. Warne has played 194 ODI matches and taken 293 wickets. Warne ranks second among bowlers with the most five-wicket hauls (37). With 96 Test wickets in 2005, Warne set a record for most wickets in a year. Warne has 13 international half centuries to his credit in the batting department.

Shane Warne was mostly known for his controversies. Warne and Mark Waugh received money from a bookie in 1994, early in their careers, to give bookies information about the pitch and weather in Sri Lanka. After ingesting a prohibited substance on the eve of the 2003 World Cup, he was disqualified from the competition. During a Big Bash League match in 2013, he got into a heated argument with Marlon Samuels, besides receiving a fine, Warne received a one-match suspension.

At one point, the two cricketers who received the most attention were Warne and Sachin Tendulkar. While Warne was busy making batsmen dance with his spin, Tendulkar was breaking records and displaying greatness. In his film, Tendulkar acknowledged that he had never before practiced for a bowler, but he had done so for Warne.
