In the aftermath of Sunday’s 32-run defeat in the second One-Day International against Sri Lanka, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma expressed his regret at his team’s inability to play “consistent” cricket. Moreover, he also stated the need for middle-order batsmen to play responsibly and how to avoid the fall of wickets. This is the second time that Sri Lanka has been able to come back thanks to a significant collapse in the middle order.

There were several reasons for the Indian batting order collapse, but the main issue was that leg-spinner Jeffrey Vandersay, who picked up six wickets to inflict the visitors a 32-run loss in the second One-Day International in Colombo on Sunday, this middle-order collapse once again highlighted India’s vulnerability against spin.

Why Only Rohit is Playing Well? What Happened to Others?

In this ODI series against Sri Lanka, only Rohit Sharma has been able to play shots freely and score runs, however, the rest of the batting order has failed not once but twice in succession. After the loss in the post-match presentation, even the skipper stated the need for change and also talked about his intent to play an aggressive brand of cricket.

Rohit scored 58 runs in the first match and then scored 64 in the second game. Even he was quoted saying “The reason I got 65 is because of the way I batted. I don’t want to compromise on my intent.” Even though the Indian openers gave good starts in both the ODI’s the rest of the batting unit crumbled to the spin attack of the home team.

Rohit said that the left-right batting combinations should have made strike rotation easier when discussing the dynamics of the present team. “You must adapt to the current circumstances. We reasoned that it would be easier to rotate the strike when hitting left-right. But the squad was weak in this area, therefore the Indian captain asked his hitters to adjust to the conditions as soon as possible.

Similar to the first ODI, Rohit gave India a great start when they were chasing 240, where he reached his fifty in just 29 balls before being dismissed. Regretfully, Axar’s determined effort aside, no other Indian batsman was able to settle into a rhythm in Colombo’s spin-friendly conditions.

Conclusion: How Will India Bounce Back in the Third ODI?

In the end, it was a complete failure from the Indian batters in this ODI series except for Rohit and Axar Patel. The Indian batters have failed to adapt to the Sri Lankan conditions and have crumbled to the Sri Lankan spin attack. Now India will have to play watchfully as Sri Lanka currently leads the series 1-0 and with one more game to go the Indian team can’t afford to make any mistakes.
