Who is the better option to lead India: Shubman Gill or Shreyas Iyer?

Who will lead Team India after Rohit Sharma?

India’s search for a future captain is one of the most discussed topics in cricket today. With Rohit Sharma leading India successfully across formats, the focus now shifts to who will take over the reins after him. So Let’s take a look at Who will lead Team India after Rohit Sharma?.

Among the frontrunners are Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer, both of whom have displayed leadership potential., but the big question remains—who is the better option to lead India in the future?

Shubman Gill: The rising leader

Shubman Gill has been earmarked as a future leader due to his technical prowess and calm demeanor. He made his international captaincy debut in the five-match T20I series against Zimbabwe in June 2024, shortly after India’s ICC T20 World Cup victory. Under his captaincy, India clinched the series 4-1, with Gill emerging as the highest run-scorer.

At just 24 years old, Gill has yet to lead India in ODIs. However, his appointment as vice-captain for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025 suggests that he is being groomed for a leadership role.

Gill also captained Gujarat Titans in IPL 2024 after Hardik Pandya’s departure. While his first IPL season as captain did not go as planned—winning 6 out of 14 matches and failing to qualify for the playoffs—his tactical nous and batting consistency remain commendable. As a young leader, he has time to refine his captaincy skills.

Shreyas Iyer: The proven captain

Shreyas Iyer, on the other hand, is a more experienced leader with an established track record. Known for his strategic thinking, composure, and ability to lead under pressure, Iyer has successfully captained multiple teams.

His leadership was instrumental in guiding Delhi Capitals to their first-ever IPL final in 2020. After moving to Kolkata Knight Riders, he led the franchise to a famous IPL title win in 2024, further cementing his reputation as a leader.

In the IPL 2025 auction, Punjab Kings acquired Iyer for a record ₹26.75 crore, making him the second-most expensive player in IPL history. This highlights his immense value as both a leader and a player.

At the international level, while Iyer has not had the same leadership opportunities as Gill, his maturity and success in the IPL make him a strong contender for India’s future captaincy.

Who will lead Team India after Rohit Sharma?

Rohit, who guided India to historic victories in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 and the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, has already retired from the shortest format, while his performance in the longest format has not been satisfactory for some time.

The hitman, on the other hand, continues to perform well in one-day internationals, and his most recent ODI knock of 76 in the Champions Trophy 2025 final against New Zealand demonstrated his talent despite being not being in his best form.

With the next ICC ODI World Cup in 2027, and Rohit would be 40 at that time, it is unclear if he will play or not at the moment, India will be looking for a regular vice-captain or captain (if Rohit retires), who can take over India’s captaincy.

If India is looking for a long-term captain, Shubman Gill appears to be the ideal choice due to his age, potential, and backing from the selectors. However, if the team needs an experienced leader who can handle high-pressure situations immediately, Shreyas Iyer seems like the stronger option.

A phased transition might be the best approach, with Gill taking over in the long run as he already being part of the leadership circle in India’s recent campaign in an ICC tournament, and Iyer playing a key leadership role in the short term. Regardless of who gets the nod, India is in safe hands with both talented cricketers ready to step up when needed.
