Shreyas Iyer Test Comeback: A New Opportunity in India’s Transition Phase

Shreyas Iyer Test Comeback: As Indian cricket transitions into a new era following the retirement of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma from Test cricket, opportunities are opening up for emerging and out-of-favor players. One such player aiming for a comeback is Shreyas Iyer, who has quietly rebuilt his case through domestic performances and consistent white-ball form.

Iyer last played a Test match in February 2024 and has featured in 14 Tests so far, scoring 811 runs at an average of 36.86, including a century. While his overall numbers are respectable, his struggles in SENA countries and a well-documented vulnerability to the short ball previously kept him out of contention.

However, reports suggest he has worked on these technical flaws, particularly during the domestic season.

His recent performances have been impressive. Iyer played a key role in India’s victorious ICC Champions Trophy 2025 campaign, emerging as the team’s top scorer with 243 runs in five matches.

Before that, the right-arm batter accumulated 530 runs in the 2023 World Cup at an average of 66.25. In red-ball cricket, he had a stellar Ranji Trophy season for Mumbai, scoring 480 runs in five games at an average of 68.57.

Shreyas Iyer and India’s middle-order puzzle post-Kohli

With Kohli’s departure creating a gap in the middle order, selectors may reconsider Iyer for the upcoming England tour. The tour could serve as a platform for him to finally establish himself as a long-term option in the Test setup.

Shreyas Iyer’s return to Test cricket may not yet be confirmed, but with form, fitness, and focus aligning, he appears ready to seize the moment. In a team entering a transitional phase, Iyer could prove to be a stabilizing force in India’s evolving red-ball lineup.

India will tour England for the five-match test series, starting June 20. The squad for the series is likely to be announced on May 23.
