BCCI Clarifies Captaincy Speculation

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia debunked claims of Shreyas Iyer being considered for India’s ODI captaincy, stating no such discussions have occurred. Despite Iyer’s leadership credentials, showcased in guiding Kolkata Knight Riders and Punjab Kings to IPL finals, the board is focusing on Shubman Gill.

Gill’s 59.04 ODI average and current roles as Test captain and T20I vice-captain position him as the preferred choice to replace Rohit Sharma, who may retire post the October 2025 Australia series.

Rohit Sharma’s ODI Future

At 38, Rohit Sharma, retired from Tests and T20Is, faces scrutiny over his ODI tenure as the 2027 World Cup looms. While his 10,709 ODI runs at 49.12 highlight his prowess, his age nearing 40 by 2027 raises questions.

The BCCI plans to address his and Virat Kohli’s futures post-Asia Cup, with a meeting to finalize leadership transitions. Gill’s youth and form make him a long-term prospect, while Iyer remains a key player but not captaincy material yet, per BCCI sources.

Gill’s Leadership Trajectory

Shubman Gill, at 26, is being groomed for multi-format leadership, with a BCCI official endorsing him as the ideal ODI captain. His 2,271 ODI runs and experience captaining India in Tests against England in 2025 bolster his case.

Coach Gautam Gambhir’s multi-captain strategy, acknowledging the impracticality of one captain across formats due to scheduling, favors Gill over Iyer. As India prepares for the Asia Cup and Australia tour, Gill’s potential captaincy signals a new era for Indian cricket, after a decent start with his red-ball captaincy in the earlier Anderson-Tendulkar trophy 2025.
