Ravichandran Ashwin scripts history with record 37th-five wicket haul, becomes 8th highest wicket-taker in test cricket

Ravichandran Ashwin has scripted history in Chennai by claiming his 37th five-wicket haul in test cricket on Sunday.  

Ashwin was on third on the list with 36 before the start of India vs Bangladesh test, but with his 6 for 88 in the second innings, he equaled the record of legendary Shane Warne with 37, and now is only behind Sri Lanka’s Muttiah Muralitharan (67).  

Not to mention, Ashwin also jumped to eight on the highest wicket-taker in test cricket list after claiming Shakib Al Hasan’s wicket during the first session of the fourth day.  

It was his fourth wicket of the match, he later took 2 more scalps and now settled at a total of 522 wickets in 191 innings.  

With India set to play four more home test in the span of next 40 days, Ashwin will look to overtake Nathan Lyon (530), before reaching Australia for the five-match Border Gavaskar Trophy, starting November 22.  

Ravichandran Ashwin’s brilliance in test cricket  

R Ashwin is one of the best spin all-rounders that has ever played the game of cricket. His match winning approach with both bat and ball in the first test versus Bangladesh in Chennai is a testimony of his brilliance.  

He has smashed 3422 runs with the bat in 142 innings, including six hundreds. While bagged a whopping 522 wickets in 191 test innings that includes 37-five wicket, and 8-wicket hauls.  

Team India was down at 144 for 6 while batting first in the first test, Ashwin then took the responsibility of rescuing the side and brought India back in the game with his century knock.  

He added 199 runs for the seventh wicket with Jadeja (86), as a result India posted 376 in their first innings.  

Bangladesh then bowled out for 149, and India declared their second innings at 287 for 4 to set a massive 515 target for the visiting team.  

The spin-magician Ashwin showed his class in the second innings and claimed six wickets to equal couple of test records and also handed India a big win by 280 runs.  

Ashwin was awarded the player of the match award; thus, he also joined the list of most player of the match awards among active players with Virat Kohli (10), Ravindra Jadeja (10). He is only the second Indian to surpass the 500-wicket mark for India in test cricket after great Anil Kumble (619).
